What a wonderful article! Thank you so much!!! There are two mines as you described where you can go (without being a part of a rock club field trip) that I know of in Virginia. One is the Morefield mine in Amelia that has some beautiful amazonite and garnets just to name a few - and the new Lucky Lake Gem mine in McKenney where you can purchase already filled buckets. (I haven't been to Lucky Lake yet.)

I've found that going on a club field trip with more experienced rockhounds is the most fun!  (Submitted by: moon on May 05, 2012)
