Question:

"Hi, I was just wondering what "10-15% matrix" means in the description of the different crystal grades. Sorry if this might be a silly question, English is not my first language. Thank you!"

Answer:

Hi there Marta,

Thank you for reaching out to us and what an excellent question.

The matrix is the finer-grained mass of material in which larger crystals are embedded.
The matrix of an igneous rock (formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava) consists of finer-grained, often microscopic, crystals in which larger crystals (phenocrysts) are embedded. The matrix of sedimentary rocks (formed when sediment is deposited out of air, ice, wind, gravity, or water flows carrying the particles in suspension) is finer-grained sedimentary material, such as clay or silt, in which larger grains or clasts are embedded. It is also used to describe the rock material in which a fossil is embedded.

So if your crystal has 10-15% matrix, that means that 10-15% off the crystal itself is matrix and the remaining is the crystal, like Amethyst or whatever crystal you were looking at. I always like to say it's the particularly unattractive part that isn't really crystal but is still a part of the crystal in total.

I hope this helps clears things up :)
