Question:

"What is the difference between Sodalite and Lapis Lazuli?"

Answer:

Hi there L,

Thanks for reaching out to us!

Lapis and Sodalite are challenging to distinguish, because they both have shades of blue and sometimes white mottling.

Lapis has Pyrite (golden flecks in it) which is what most of the time you can go with to tell these two apart. Sodalite can also have black inclusions and is generally more grainy in appearance. Sometimes in lower grades and without the Pyrite flecks, it can be especially hard to differentiate between these two stones. In this case, you can do a scratch test on a porcelain tile. Sodalite will leave a white streak whereas Lapis would leave a blue streak because it's primarily composed of Lazurite.

Hope this helps!
