Contrary to what you were told, Rose Quartz is a great stone for men, especially men who have kind of stoic heart or who may not know that you are into them. If you still are unsure about giving him a pink crystal, the heart chakra is the color green, so a crystal like Malachite would be an appropriate substitute.  Garnet could also be a good choice. It's quite a bold crystal. Where Rose Quartz is gentle, shy love, garnet is bold and confident love.
