Question:
"I just purchased a pound of chrysoprase and my questions is can I break the stone with a hammer then tumble it? Please help!"
Answer:
Hi Felicia :)
I love tumbling rocks! What type of tumbler do you have? A vibratory or a barrel tumbler? Have you been tumbling for a long time or relatively new at it?
Chrysoprase is around a 7 on the Moh's Hardness Scale, so it should tumble nicely. You could break it with a hammer, but there is no way to control the various sizes - you may get small pieces that once tumbled look like tiny pebbles and then other larger pieces will look like regular tumbles. If you know of someone who has a lapidary shop, ask if they can use a rock saw to cut the chrysoprase in relatively equal portions. If not, it will be fun to use all the various tumbled sizes in a variety of projects, so it is a win win situation :)
