Hello. I want to make jewelry with crystals, but I do not know what kinds of material to use. For example, wire wrapping, or using leather twine. Will the metals of the wire interfere with the healing properties/vibrations of the crystals? Thank you.

Dear F,

Thank you for contacting Healing Crystals with your question about making jewelry with crystals. There are several ways to do this. One, is to purchase gemstone beads and string them. Another popular way is to wire-wrap crystals to be pendants or earrings.

Wire-wrapping can offer the benefit of enhancing the energy flow of some crystals, and as you get more experienced in working with both the wire and the crystals, you will find that some stones seem to prefer one type of wire over another. Copper, silver and gold alloys are some popular choices. And, by the way, sometimes you can get a better deal on copper wire at a hardware or home improvement store than from a craft or jewelry supply shop!

Leather and twine can also be used, though I have no personal experience with those media, so I can't offer much guidance there. Some people even crochet or macrame’ jewelry including crystals.

My suggestion to you is that you do some online research and before purchasing the jewelry making supplies. Wire, pliers and other supplies can get expensive quickly, so it’s good to have an idea of what you want to do before purchasing anything. If you search for tutorials on wire-wrapped jewelry online, you will also find there are some very helpful videos available to give you some project ideas to start with.

As for the crystals themselves, I’d recommend starting to wrap something that is hard enough (moh’s scale of 7 or higher) that it will not scratch easily. Also, rough or natural crystals are often easier to wrap than polished or tumbled ones, which tend to slip out of your hand and fly across the room when you are just starting out (and sometimes even when you’ve been wrapping awhile!) wrapping a Quartz Point can be a good starter-project.

I hope this information has been helpful to you. And of course, if you have any further questions regarding crystals or crystal healing, please feel free to contact us again.

Crystal Blessings!
