Hi,
I was wondering if you could clarify how to determine if a piece of quartz or gemstone has a "phantom." I studied the photo of an amethyst phantom - and wasn't sure if it had a phantom because it had several shades of color - light, dark, light, or if it was more related to the shape.  I've also received several pieces of clear quartz from you when I've placed orders.  Are those known as "phantoms"?  How can you tell if a piece of clear quartz has a phantom? It seemed like the pieces with phantoms were small and block-shaped.
I apologize if I am missing the obvious.  It is very fascinating.  Thank you.
Deborah Lyon

Dear Deborah~

Greetings and thank you for your question.  Phantoms occur in a crystal when growth has stopped for some reason, and then it begins again, often with another mineral on top of the original crystal.  What results is what usually looks like a crystal that contains a ghost of another crystal within it.  While Phantoms within crystals can vary in mineral, size, and shape, the most common type of Phantom on the market is the Clear Quartz Crystal containing a Phantom of another mineral, usually Chlorite, but other types include Hematite, Sulphur, Cuprite, Chalcopyrite, and even Fluorite.  Even more rare are Citrine Phantoms, where the Citrine Crystal has grown up to cover the original Smokey Quartz Crystal.  You can see a photo of a Citrine Phantom here:

The Amethyst Phantom is a uniquely beautiful example of the Phantom Crystal.  With these crystals, the growth of the Manganese and Iron within the Amethyst has abruptly stopped, and then the Quartz around it begins to grow again.  One can look within the crystal to see a formation of the Manganese and Iron that looks like a smaller, fuzzier crystal within the Amethyst.  While the Phantom is usually kind of blurry looking, you can usually still see a definite shape that somewhat repeats the pattern of the larger crystal.  Here is a good photo of an Amethyst Phantom:

Phantom Crystals carry the vibrations necessary for one to explore past lives and karma, with the possibility of achieving great personal growth.  Meditation with the Phantom Crystal can bring new insights into old patterns of behavior, allowing one to acknowledge the real motive behind any pattern of bad decision making, so they can learn how to move beyond unnecessary patterns.  It is believed that by working with the Phantom Crystal, it is possible to access the Akashic Record, which would also further one's discovery of the deeper meaning behind events and situations, and the cycles contained in the universe.   Phantom Crystals are said to have exceptional healing energy as well, bringing the memory of original perfection back to the cells of the body.

Some Phantom Crystals will go through periods of no growth several times.  This process has the amazing result of several phantoms within one crystal!  To see all of our Phantom Crystals, take a look at this page:

Hopefully, this information and the link above will help you to understand Phantom Crystals better.  Feel free to send another email if you have any more questions.

Peace and Blessings,

~Crystal CAT
