Everyone has varied reactions to crystal energy. Sometimes if a crystal has not been cleansed before use it can cause chaotic energy. I strongly suggest checking articles here about cleansing and clearing your crystals.
The other thing that might be happening is that the crystal is enhancing other crystals you may be using with it. Since Herkimer Diamond is related to the Crown chakra and assists with opening you up to higher self, it can be strong in showing you that something in the Heart chakra is blocking your communication with the higher self.
Try using some Rose Quartz to help with any blockage in the Heart chakra.
