Q: I recently was gifted a crystal ball approx. 4" in diameter. My friend and myself are wondering how to go about checking the authenticity of a clear qurarz crystal ball. Do you know how it can be tested?
Answer:
Hi J,
"Crystal Balls" are usually created from clarified Quartz, meaning the quartz is crushed and heated, impurities removed, and then it is shaped into a sphere. Clarified crystal balls will be very clear, like glass. The only difference is that with glass you can see right through without any distortion, while clarified quartz spheres will be clear but with some distortion.
There are also "Real" crystal balls, which are natural quartz shaped into spheres (Yes, there is actually a machine that turns the quartz to shape it into a sphere. With real Quartz, there is most always an inclusion, mists or veils, internal fractures etc. They are never 100% clear (that I have ever seen anyway).
There are ways you can test, but there are some downsides. You would have to be willing to damage the sphere to do it. Any lab would have to have a small piece of the sphere to test. Plus, testing is costly ($80 and up) and the wait may be long. I could only find a few labs that do this particular type of testing.

 Test by holding it over small print and if it magnifies, you are most likely in possession of glass or some form of glass mixed object. Genuine quartz crystal by nature won’t magnify the print, only mild to moderate distortion effects. Many precious stones, including crystal sellers are taking advantage of vulnerable people by selling fakes, substitutes and other junk and its a crime. Many people are now realizing that much of what’s purchased today all come from nations like China and India, mass production is big business and good people are being ripped off continuously. One certain way of obtaining specific gem stones is either through a highly reputable jewelry dealer or by contacting well known mines themselves (many sell gems at the mines when consumers dig them up). Some sellers in America don’t always know what they are selling to you and this is because they import much of their stock from overseas or purchase them from unscrupulous dealers.  Thanks Darren for the tips on how to spot a fake (or rather, glass) crystal ball from the real thing. The lack of inclusions is a big giveaway for glass balls, unless of course they're those extremely expensive sintered SiO2 quartz balls - unlikely to have received one of these from EBay/China. It's a faker's paradise in China. More fool us in the west for buying anything from this society of commercial dishonesty, and their lack of much home-grown IP. It's just copy/copy/copy to make a buck aided and abetted by greedy westerners happy to flog phony crap as pointless middlemen. I get that the whole 'crystal' healing sh*it is just superstitious palaver, but still, people should be able to get a genuine crystal if that's what they're prepared to pay for of course. There are sooo many people saying this on the internet and it is really a shame as this kind of information is not only unhelpful, it also fosters further un-researched responses. If you look into the science of light refraction you will see that quartz ABSOLUETLY DOES MAGNIFY. I'm not trying to troll you DarrenS., I just seriously am bothered by misinformation, especially when people don't know very much and are just trying to get factual answers that will help them. | They have to tell you if you read everything most of them say 40% crystal and the rest is glass. I only found a few places that sell true large Cystal gazing balls they are not cheap if they are real crystals. They are not clear but I would rather them be that way then glass.
