Hi! How do you know a crystal is a healing crystal? How does it become a healing crystal?

Dear P,

Thank you for reaching out to us with your question about Healing Crystals.  Science is still not entirely sure what gives crystals and minerals their healing energy, but there are a few theories to explain the use of crystals for healing throughout human history.

First, a crystal is a crystal based on its structure. There are several specific geometric shapes, such as a rhomboid or tetrahedron that crystals may grow in. The specific way energy behaves within these shapes can be one reason for the beneficial or healing energy properties.

Now, all crystals are minerals, but not all minerals are crystals. So, you may have something like Emerald that has all the elements of that mineral in it, but it did not form in the crystal pattern, but in a more opaque and non-specific structure. So, the super shiny, gemmy Emerald we think of for fine jewelry is a crystal, but there is lesser quality Emerald that is lighter green with other inclusions and which is opaque instead of translucent.

Here’s a cool part—one of the major causes of the healing energy is the combination of  elements that combine to form the minerals and crystals. So, in the healing community, we tend to use the word “crystal” to include minerals as well,  because they tend to have the same basic energy properties as the actual crystalline versions, and they are generally much less expensive and easier to come by in many cases.

So, then to get to your question, as to how to tell if one is a “healing crystal” or not. Well, there are many books and resources on minerals and crystals that have been used through history and what they’ve been used for. This is often based on literally thousands of years of human experience. If you know what a particular mineral or crystal is, then you can learn about it’s properties.

How they become “healing crystals” is largely based on the fact that they exist. They don’t have to go through training, though programming them (we have resources on our site you can check out for more on this) can increase their inherent healing energy. As I said, their crystalline structure, their elemental composition, their color and how and when they were formed all contribute to their healing properties.

I hope this information has been helpful to you. If we can be of any further assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact us again. I hope this information has been helpful to you. And of course, if you have any further questions regarding crystals or crystal healing, please feel free to contact us again.

Crystal Blessings!
