If someone wants to give you crystals, you have a choice to accept or refuse the gift, but it's not a bad thing if someone wants to give you crystals.
I won't say that they carry bad energy but the energy may just not be compatible with you and you also have no idea what they were used for or exposed to. That being said, it is always a good idea to clear your crystals before you start using them irrespective of whether you bought them or received them as a gift.
