Hi M,
I must share the standard disclaimer that I am not a doctor and cannot give out medical advice. Crystals for healing should be used as a compliment to other therapies and not as a replacement for regular medical care.

No, you do not have to program a crystal. I have a saying that does make sense, though in a limited way, a non-programmed crystal is like giving a person a difficult task and not giving him instructions on how to do it. He will first have to analyze the problem and determine where to start, develop a routine to use to reach completion of the task and then start.
A non-programmed crystal will do what is does in its natural state. It uses it's energy to assist you in the problem that it feels is necessary for your highest good. It is like having a list of priorities starting at the top of the list and continue down the list until it has completed everything it can for you. At this point many people find that the crystal will move on to a new person and start over again.

By programming we give the crystal our version of the list with our priority as the top of the list so to speak. So while one priority is completed it may not complete everything it can for us while it is attempting to finish our list. Sometimes we want the crystals to accomplish a task that is very difficult and because a crystals energy is so subtle, the task we assign may take a very long time to complete. I have found that by carrying several crystals if you leave one or two free to do as it wants for our highest good and one programed for our priority we will find that sometimes a non-programmed crystal will complete all its task quicker. It is up to you to decide whether to program or not. If you feel there is a situation that is in need of immediate attention, then by all means program the crystal. I hope this answers you question.

this was very interesting. I like the idea of the crystal going down the list of things it will do in its natural state. I use all my crystals for emotional healing but if they want to help in other ways it's fine with me!  (Submitted by: Lissa on May 09, 2011)
