Hi J,
Thanks for your email. Your question is a very good one. I have not found a way to tell male vs female with my visual eyes, but when I "tune into" the crystals energy I often feel a more masculine or feminine energy to them. This is not always the case, however the crystals that I work with the most usually end up feeling to me one way or another.
I suggest that you try meditating with several different crystals and when your mind is very quiet, gently ask in your mind if the crystal is more male or female. You may not always receive an answer, but I feel that you will be able to "tune in" to at least a couple of your crystals and they will "tell you" the information that you are requesting.
I see our crystals as partners in my ascension process and as I work with them, I begin to feel unique qualities from each of them. If you're working on a particular issue, tuning in to the crystals can also help determine which is the best to use at that time. I begin by choosing crystals that match the metaphysical qualities I am working on, but I also use my intuition to "tune in" to my available crystals to ask if there are any others that will be helpful to me in resolving the issue. Each Crystal is unique, just like us.

 I've been working with crystals for 2 years now and I've found that they do in fact have distinct personalities of being either a male or of female origin. While researching my very un-expected Kundalini Awakening, I heard that you can ask the particular crystal what they are. My pendulum crystals are mostly female and you find out their bios by using the process of "Yes/No" questions. They can tell you where they lived, their birth and death dates, what they did in life and how they can best help you. Another psychic once suggested to simply "Ask them" for their preferred method of cleansing and charging, which can vary from crystal to crystal. Most of mine spin in a CCW direction for a yes answer, a few will turn CW.
