Crystals for Compassion and Empathy

By Susan Jolley

I have talked a lot about forgiveness.  This is a difficult concept for many to grasp; I understand this completely.  I was talking with a friend last week who is having difficulty forgiving her mother and she wanted to know how I gained the ability to forgive mine.  Since Mother’s Day is approaching and I know that many mother-daughter relationships are strained to say the least, I thought I would share my little “Aha” moment in our conversation with you.

I started telling my friend, Anna that I understood how she felt as I too harbored such animosity towards my mother.  My healing journey began the day I awakened to the fact that I was actually becoming the same bitter and fearful woman that my mother was.  Out of my anger for becoming her, I made the decision to stop.  After reading many books and listening to a Life Coach that I greatly admire, I fully understood that one can only teach what they know.  Some have the strength to change; others like my mother just did not have the confidence and courage to change.  Then I took a look at her upbringing and suddenly I saw myself in her.  She was the same emotionally and mentally injured person that I was.

For the first time in my 45years I felt empathy for her and I finally understood.  Because she did not know how to speak of her fears and worries in a healthy manner, she became angry and that was transferred to me, which I took to mean I was not wanted and very much unloved.  I could see for the first time that she actually really loved me; she was just incapable of showing me the way I felt it should be shown.  I could now see the love in her outbursts.  I felt her pain just as much as I felt my own.  I could finally give her compassion, empathy, understanding and, most of all, forgiveness.  I was able to feel unconditional love for her.  In doing this, I also found my humanity, which felt amazing.  What a gift she had given me and what a gift I had given her.  She now learns from me and I can now take a deep breath and peacefully move through any uneasy feeling when she pushes a button.

Now, I can only speak from my experience, but I strongly feel that this is not just for mothers and daughters.  This holds true for any relationship.  Also keep in mind that forgiveness does not excuse the action at hand.  Forgiveness is for you, not the perpetrator.  It cuts the tether and sets you free.

Crystals that will help remind of my story are:
