Turquoise Chips

Question:

"With all of the hand sanitizer that we are putting on our hands, can it damage the stones in my rings? I have malachite, turquoise, moonstones, and amber."

Answer:

Hi there CV,

Thanks for reaching out to us and what an awesome question AND comment!

So many crystals are hardy and can take some beating with alcohol, however softer stones like Kyanite, Selenite, and Calcite won't do too well I'm imagining. It would also boil down to how fragile the piece is.

Malachite is one you shouldn't get wet too often and expose yourself to it because it can be toxic BUT with polished pieces, you don't have to worry too much about that. It's more for natural stones and if you happen to be grinding them to dust. You can read more about toxic stones here and here about crystals which can be damaged by water.

How alcohol would effect metals, I am unsure. I do know that some plated metals can quickly rust from exposure to liquids. While the alcohol in sanitizer does dissolve relatively quickly, the exposure can cause the metal (if plated) to be wet often, and that can cause some rust and weakening in my opinion.

I hope this helps :)
