"Can I break a piece of my crystal to give it a friend?"
I feel that you could do this, without there being a problem concerning the crystal's energy. Remember, the rocks are hammered and chipped away at with tools, in the first place, to remove them from the earth.
When I first began collecting crystals, I got a beautiful piece of tumbled Rainbow Moonstone that I dropped, causing the underside of the tip to break off. At first, I was bummed and concerned, however, I intuitively felt that I should continue working with the crystal. It's energy wasn't diminished after breaking. If anything, when I put a finger on the broken area, I feel like I'm able to connect with the energy a little more, kinda like a window into "the heart" of the crystal.
I feel that your intention of wanting to share something special (a piece of the crystal) with someone you love is a good reason to split it into more pieces.
I do advise finding out what number the hardness of the crystal is according to the mohs scale and knowing if it's more likely to break apart cleanly or if it might shatter.
