Aroma Recipe: St. Patrick’s Day Blend

By: Stephanie Tingle

Have you ever walked into a space and felt instantly at peace or rejuvenated after a long day?  Many times this is due to the use of specific scents to enhance the mood of that space. Restaurants, department stores, hospitals, and other businesses have long been aware of the ability of scent to influence behavior.  You can reap the same benefits in your own space through the use of aromatherapy and essential oils. Aromatherapy is the practice of using scent to influence mental and physical well-being.  An easy way to benefit from aromatherapy is by using essential oils, which are the pure essences of plants, flowers, or herbs. These pure oils are collected by various methods including steam extraction and pressing.  Essential oils can greatly benefit your body and change your emotions through their natural scents. While they can smell pleasant, “fragrance oils” do contain synthetic ingredients and do not offer the therapeutic benefits of essential oils. So for the greatest benefit, be sure to use only pure, good quality essential oils and products that contain them.  Unless specified otherwise, essential oils should not be ingested.  Skin should always be tested for sensitivity prior to topical use.

St. Patrick’s Day is the perfect time to incorporate the use of aromatherapy and essential oils and I love to create a special aromatherapy spray just for this day. It’s fresh, minty, and perfect for celebrating the clearing out of old ideas and energy in order to make way for the new!  Green crystals, such as Green Aventurine, Moss Agate, or Serpentine, are a fun way to add extra healing vibrations and make the spray even more effective.  Adding any of these crystals will help balance the Heart Chakra to clear out negativity, infuse it with love, and facilitate healing.  All three of these stones are also wonderful for bringing prosperity and a little “Luck o’ the Irish” into your life!

St. Patrick was actually born in Britain, not Ireland, around 390 A.D. to a Christian family.  By most accounts, Christianity was not of much importance to him while he was growing up.  As a teenager, he was kidnapped and taken to Ireland to work as a slave. According to folklore, after about seven years, a voice came to St. Patrick in a dream which told him to escape. He did so and found his way back to Britain on a pirate ship. The same voice visited him again in a dream and urged him to return to Ireland. By this time he was deeply religious and decided to become an ordained priest. He returned to Ireland where he spent the rest of his life trying to convert the pagan Irish to Christianity.  Mythology surrounding the story of St. Patrick says that he banished all the snakes from Ireland.  However,  it’s unlikely that there have ever been snakes in Ireland since the frigid water surrounding it would make it impossible for the cold-blooded creatures to get there. It’s likely that there is a more figurative explanation to this bit of lore. St. Patrick drove the antiquated, pagan customs out of Ireland and ushered in a new age of Christianity.  It is said that St. Patrick used the three leaves of a shamrock to explain the Christian Holy trinity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, providing us with the popular symbolism that we continue to use today.

To make a four -ounce water-based aromatherapy spray in celebration of St.  Patrick’s Day, you’ll need:

One 4 ounce spray bottle

4 ounces distilled water

Essential oils as listed below; please make sure to use only pure  essential oils.

Crystals as listed below (optional)

ST. PATRICK’S DAY BLEND

20 drops spearmint essential oil

10 drops vanilla essential oil

5 drops peppermint essential oil

Green Aventurine, Moss Agate, or Serpentine

Directions:

Add essential oils to the spray bottle.

Add water to fill the spray bottle and swirl gently to mix.

If you’d like, add small crystals or crystal chips to the bottle.

The crystals listed in the recipe are a recommendation; you may always use Clear Quartz or any other crystal that you are drawn to. Alternatively, the essential oils can also be mixed into 2 ounces of carrier oil, such as Jojoba or Sweet Almond oil, and applied externally to the body. This blend is a great way to usher in new energy as a way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!

May your pockets be heavy and your heart be light, may good luck pursue you each morning and night.

-Irish Blessing
