Hi Judy,

Malachite is a wonderful heart stone, so I would work with Malachite in meditation by holding it to the heart chakra. You could place a piece of Malachite in front of you while you sit or even make a ring of malachite and sit in the middle of the circle. Holding a Malachite mala and chanting a mantra also makes for a powerful meditation.

Let your intuition be your guide and do what feels right for you. Try a few different placements and pay attention to how you feel with each one. I would love to hear back on how it goes!!

with love and crystal blessings,
Kristi

If you are going to set up an altar with the four directions in mind, what stones would be particularly appropriate for each of the four directions - north, south east and west, because of their own intrinsic characteristics?

Here's an article I found about stones and the elements~ http://crystal-cure.com/element-stones.html
This place has a small list of stones and have their associated element listed http://www.wicca-chat.com/stonesandcrystals.htm
You can also look at what astrology symbol a crystal resonates with best, because the astrology signs have elemental associations, you can use those.
My suggestions would be a back or grounding stone like hematite, back tourmaline or even a "plain" rock you find outside for earth/north. Sunstone or garnet would be good for fire/south, or a red, orange or yellow stone that brings strength and energy. I think something like lapis lazuli or amethyst for air/east, a stone that represents or increases intuition and psychic powers. And sodalite, blue lace agate, or some stone you feel emotionally connected to for west/water, since water represents emotions.

I love Cunningham's book Crystal, Gem and Metal Magic! It has a really nice list of crystals that correspond not only to the elements but to the four directions as well. I actually loaned my book out, so i do not have it handy, but if you have a copy or can check out a copy at your local library (or even research it here online), it is well worth it!!
