I have a question about cleansing/clearing crystals. I have brought several wonderful pieces from you guys (you are all so wonderful and helpful) I feel like its time to clear and re-energize them and I've read your articles on using sage incense to do so, but I'm a bit worried about the process of it. How can I safely burn sage and what precautions should I be aware of so that I don't set anything on fire? Thank you very much.

Hi A,

Thanks for reaching out to us. I love using sage to clear energy! Before smudging with sage, you will need to have a dish to catch the ashes with, to set it in if it’s still lit, and to possibly use to snuff out the burning part, if needed. Some suggestions are a glass or ceramic kitchen dish, an abalone shell or a candle holder. If you are concerned about using it the first time, start with a smaller bundle of sage instead of a large 10 inch long wand, which can create much more smoke and has more ash. Light a small portion of the sage and waft the smoke where you need it. I like to use a feather for this. I will caution you that sage is a strong smell and can be overpowering for some people. For me, it’s one of my favorite smells! :-) You also shouldn’t use sage or other incense around those with asthma or breathing issues.

You will want to be careful and pay attention when using sage because some ash and small pieces can fall off of the smudge stick. I like to smudge my crystals over a hard floor instead of carpet, just in case. You can also smudge with sage over a bathroom or kitchen counter. I have used sage for years and I find it to be safe as long as you are watching it. Don’t ever leave sage burning unattended. While the best way is to let the smoking sage go out on its own, you can dowse it with water or snuff in out in the dish if you need to. I hope this answers all your questions. Please let me know if you have any others. May your journey be blessed with Love and Light.

Crystal Blessings,

Stephanie A.
