I just bought a couple necklaces, a Lapis Lazuli and a Black Tourmaline, and i just saw the article about crystal cautions. I was wondering if it is harmful to wear them because of the sulfur pyrite and aluminum? Is the caution just about making elixirs?

Hi L,

The caution is more geared toward making elixirs, and in some cases working with crystal powders can be harmful if you inhale the powder.  In regards to Lapis Lazuli the article cautions against Sulfur and the Pyrite inclusions, but only if the Pyrite forms a “white powdery substance or residue.”  I have yet to see this occur on any Lapis Lazulior Pyrite I have owned but it is something to be aware of in case this does occur on a piece that you own.  Sulfur is used in many dermatological products so it should be fine next to your skin unless you have an allergic reaction.  The caution for Black Tourmaline is in regards to the inclusion of aluminum, which comprises many products that come into contact with our skin without adverse effect.  When aluminum is dissolved in water and utilized in high doses is when it becomes toxic.  I am currently wearing a Black Tourmaline pendant that I have had for years and haven’t experienced any skin irritation, and I also have Lapis Lazuli jewelry I wear often.  I hope this helps.

Crystal Blessings~
