Hi, I was wondering if crystals "wear out"? Do they need replacing, and if so when? Thanks.

Thanks so much for your question about whether crystals "wear out" and/or need replacing? I'm not sure if you meant wear out physically or energetically - so I'll respond to both!
Crystals can get physically worn down. Sometimes by the elements or their environment. For instance certain crystals can be worn down by water like Lapis Lazuli, Calcite, and Turquoise. Some can be worn by using them often. I have a Malachite that I like to hold or sleep with often and I can see that it is a little smaller and has some impressions where I tend to rub it when I hold it. This typically happens with raw, natural crystals. Tumble Crystals are much less likely to be worn down.
Energetically I believe that a Crystal can get tired and/or just be holding on to too much negative energy. When that happens it is very easy to cleanse and recharge your crystal. Here is a link to one of our videos about cleansing your crystals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCXIK4ejcu0.
After you've removed any old energy, recharging your crystal can be as simple as holding it in your hand and thinking about your intention for the crystal's energy. Using a Full Moon is also an excellent resource for re-energizing crystals with specific intentions.
Finally, I tend to think of crystals as individuals and there really never is a "replacement". I could (and have!) obtained new MalachiteCrystals but I could never "replace" the one that has been my ally for so long. What I can do is take the best care of it that I can and still love it just as much even though it is a little older and maybe not as bright and shiny as a newer crystal. And of course I can always get it some new crystal friends!
