‘The Little Book of Crystal Tips & Cures’

A Book Review by Stephanie Arnold

Author:  Phillip Permutt

ISBN-13: 978-1906094522   ©2008

Even the cover of this book is playful and colorful – a rainbow of crystals arranged in a spiral adorns this handy reference.  The information contained in The Little Book of Crystal Tips & Cures by Phillip Permutt, is laid out in a unique, easy-to-follow format that anyone can use – making it a user-friendly tool for both beginners and more advanced crystal healers.

It is filled with vibrant colors, full color pictures of each crystal, and creatively drawn sketches.  This little guidebook is truly a pleasure to flip through!  Included is an illustrated listing of 101 different crystals.  It is not an all-inclusive listing of crystals and instead focuses on the crystals that are commonly found and available.

Conveniently organized by color, it’s easy to identify an unknown crystal from the beautiful photos included in this book.  Mr. Permutt takes a different approach, and instead of listing all healing qualities of the crystals as many other books do, he offers suggestions on how to use each stone for healing.  For example, he suggests you “put Chrysocolla in your garden to help balance the Earth’s natural energy” and “keep Sunstone near you to see the brighter side of life.”  I love his creative tips!

On each page is a catchy phase to help you easily remember the basic properties of the crystals, such as “Revitalizing Cavansite encourages fresh insight” and “Like ocean waves lapping at the shore, sea-colored Aquamarine lets worries ebb.”  He also lists the zodiac sign, planet, element and chakra associated with each crystal in an easy-to-find format that won’t leave you searching separate lists.

Mr. Permutt includes a collection of quick reference guides in the front of this book. Along with the listing of crystals, he also includes general information on crystals and how to use them. There’s also basic information on selecting crystals, energizing your space with crystals, basic pendulum dowsing, clearing the energy of your crystals, and how to use crystals for healing, meditation and elixirs.

Unlike other books, The Little Book of Crystal Tips & Cures includes fundamental knowledge for basic crystal healing and illustrates several ways to do this. This prevents beginners from being left holding a crystal and being unsure of what to do next. These guides are not overly detailed and only provide the basic information on each topic, along with some drawings and pictures to help further explain.  Advanced crystal healers may find themselves needing more comprehensive information on these topics. This book was designed as a guidebook, and doesn’t include detailed crystal information like Mohs hardness ratings, locations the crystal is found, history or lore of crystals, or the rarity of each one.

Although the book only contains a limited list of the more popular crystals, its convenient, compact size and plethora of knowledge makes it a great portable reference for when you are out crystal shopping.  Mr. Permutt once again does a superb job of conveying his more than 15 years of crystal knowledge in an easy-to-follow format, to attract new and old crystal lovers alike.

The Little Book of Crystal Tips & Cures is a valuable resource and a great addition to any crystal healer’s library.  Overall, I recommend this book as a terrific guide for beginners, and as an excellent quick-reference guide for all crystal healers.
