The ordinary arts we practice every day at home

are of more importance to the soul than their

simplicity might suggest - Thomas Moore

Let’s face it - no one really likes cleaning and the very mention of “spring cleaning” instills a sense of dread and an overwhelming urge to procrastinate (and hide under the covers). However, with the dregs of winter still hanging on for what seems like an extended stay, it might be a good time to get a jump-start on spring, even if it is just to invite this season of renewal and new beginnings into our homes as well as our souls. And unlike the drudgery that often accompanies spring cleaning activities, fear not! We’re going to make this as fun and rewarding as we can, with a bit of help from our friends of the crystal world.

Grab your broom, mop and power up the vacuum!

Many folks dread spring cleaning because they feel as if they have to clean their entire home in one day, which is fine if you have that kind of stamina and your space isn’t that large. For the rest of us, however, it can be daunting. When the seasons change, it might be a good idea to change your way of thinking as well. Rule number 1: THERE ARE NO RULES! Well, just one perhaps - it doesn’t matter in what order you clean, as long as it is thorough. So, don your cleaning attire, put on your favorite music (sound clears away stagnant energy too!) and grab your rubber gloves!

Clear the clutter - it might sound obvious, but how many of us walk past that pile of mail on the counter or the kids’ toys in the family room, or the shoes in the foyer and just keep walking? This is where the stagnant energy is gathering and clutter prevents energy from moving in a clear path. Put things in their proper places, discard unused items or give them to charity.

After the clutter is cleared, you may find that you can breathe a bit easier. Now, start cleaning, one room at a time. Put the curtains in the wash, so by the time they’re done, you’ll be done with that room/area (if you change curtains seasonally, wait until the room is clean before hanging them). Start at the top and work your way down. You’d be surprised how much dust is lingering up by the ceiling and on the walls! Clean the windows, dust the shelves, vacuum the rugs. Don’t forget the corners, where bad energy may lurk. Not only are you removing dust, dirt and grime, but the negative energy that has built up over time is also being removed!

Don’t forget to give your car a spring cleaning as well. After all, it’s part of your “space”.

Note: Always remember when cleaning to put your intentions out there. You can say, “This room (space, office, home, etc.) is cleared and happiness (joy, health, abundance, etc.) surrounds it/us.” Make up your own and sing it if you want. Remember: this is supposed to be fun, right?

Clean those crystals!

In addition to cleaning/clearing your space, those lovely crystals you have collected need to be cleaned as well. State your intention while you do this, so the crystals know that they can relax and renew themselves. Here’s a great article on how to clean/clear your crystals: How to Clear Crystals. After they’re all cleared, make sure objects they sit in (bowls, dishes, trays, etc.) are also clean and sparkly.

Color, color and more color!

After the clutter has been cleared and your space is shiny-bright, you can add the energy of spring into it by placing crystals around that are sure to brighten your mood and enliven your space.

Green- New leaves, fresh-cut grass, and spring growth: these are the essence of green and Prehnite is one of those crystals that can add that burst of “spring fresh” into any space. Its bright green coloring is refreshing just to look at! Place some in your potted plants to encourage healing, or out in the garden for a healing environment.

Some other green crystals that are wonderful to use in your newly cleaned space are Amazonite, Chrysoprase, Green Aventurine, Green Quartz, Malachite, Moss Agate, and Peridot. In addition to Prehnite, these are crystals that can bring luck, health, abundance and healing into your home, office, car, etc.

Yellow- Daffodils, sunshine - you get the idea. Yellow crystals such as Amber, Citrine and the like are wonderful for their uplifting energy as well as helping with concentration, new life changes (moving, job, etc.) and getting rid of harmful energy caused by envy or deceit. You can also place a Yellow Jasper in your car to protect drivers and passengers alike while traveling.

Orange- Joy, creativity and abundance are some of the associations of the color orange and the crystals that enhance these are Sunstone, Carnelian, Orange Aventurine, Orange Calcite and Tangerine Quartz.

A word about Clear Quartz - this is the all-around go-to for space clearing and inviting good, clean energy into your home. It will rid the area of negative energy and instilling that sense of new beginnings and springtime. You can place it anywhere you need to brighten up a space, increase your positive outlook, and enhance your health.

After your space is cleared (and your crystals as well), you may wish to create a crystal grid in your home to invite more prosperity, health or protection to your space. Click here for more information on creating a crystal grid.

Some time for yourself

The house is clean, the car is clean and now it’s time for you to take care of yourself. Make this your “me time” and enjoy a long bath or shower if you want. Put on your favorite music, light some scented candles if you wish and just indulge, even if it’s just for a short time (those with youngsters, I understand, so take what you can get). Moisturize your skin and get into your most comfortable clothing.

Now... just breathe.
