This month, we begin a series on the Platonic Solids.    Below is a general overview and in future newsletters, we will cover each platonic solid shape in more depth.

What are Platonic Solids?

History

In the study of Geometry and/or Sacred Geometry, there is a group of five unique shapes called the “Platonic Solids”. These three-dimensional shapes all have a set of characteristics in common. All sides are equal, all angles are identical and each face is the same.

The ancient Greeks studied the Platonic solids extensively. While the history is somewhat vague, most sources credit the Greek mathematician Pythagoras with their initial discovery. However, it was the philosopher, Plato, for which the Platonic Solids were named. Plato has the distinction of associating a classical element for each Platonic Solid and believed each of these elements was constructed from the five, three-dimensional shapes.

Cube – Earth

Cube - Platonic Solid

Tetrahedron - Fire

Tetrahedron - Platonic Solid

Octahedron – Air

Octahedron - Platonic Solid

Icosahedron - Water

Icosahedron - Platonic Solid

Dodecahedron – Ethers (Universe)

Dodecahedron - Platonic Solid

These solids are used in the study of mathematics, medicine, science, astrology, meteorology and geology just to name a few. They form the basis of all structure.

They are the building blocks of each element in the Periodic Table of Elements and can be traced to naturally occurring crystalline structures. The Platonic Solids are everywhere, from the tiniest of molecules to the expansive Universe and beyond.

Physical Qualities

The group of Platonic Solids include (listed from fewest faces to most faces) the:

Tetrahedron-- The Tetrahedron, also called the Triangular Pyramid. It contains 4 faces, 4 vertices and 6 edges. Each face is triangular.

Cube-- The Cube, also called the regular hexahedron, is the second of the five shapes. It has 6 square faces, 8 vertices and 12 edges. Each face is square.

Octahedron-- The Octahedron has 8 faces, 6 vertices and 12 edges. It is made up of eight triangles, which is formed from placing two square based pyramids base to base.

Dodecahedron-- The Dodecahedron has 12 faces, 20 vertices and 30 edges. Each face is shaped in the form of a Pentagon.

Icosahedron-- The Icosahedron has 20 faces, 12 vertices and 30 edges. Each face is in the shape of an equilateral triangle.

Metaphysical Connections

The Cube is associated with the element of Earth and corresponds to the Root Chakra. The Cube sits flat, firmly rooted to its spot. Meditating on this shape will assist in grounding your energy, regaining focus, removing tensions and easing physical stresses. It will reconnect your energies to that of the Earth and Nature.

The Tetrahedron represents the element of Fire and is linked to the Solar Plexus, the center for personal power, acceptance, and a natural balance between the physical and the spiritual. Each side sits flat, no matter how it is turned, making it the perfect symbol for balance and stability.

The Octahedron represents the element of Air and is linked to the Heart Chakra, which is the center for love and compassion. This center includes the healing and nurturing aspects within, which allow that sacred, safe space in which to find acceptance and forgiveness. The self-reflecting shape of the Octahedron moves into a higher vibration of reflection, compassion and healing. Through working with the Octahedron, we attune to the more spiritual nature of self and in effect begin to understand our true nature.

The Dodecahedron is linked to the Ethers/Universe and is linked to the higher Chakras
(6th-Third Eye, 7th- Crown, 8th and above) and would be a perfect tool to use in meditation and connection with this Source energy. The energy held within the Dodecahedron will raise the holder/users vibration up to meet its own. This allows for a state of connection to Higher Self/Source. The Dodecahedron is an expression of life and consciousness, allowing us to go beyond the physical vibrations of the body and to reconnect with the higher vibration of our true nature.

The Icosahedron is associated with the element of Water and corresponds to the Sacral Chakra. Water is all about movement, flow, and change. This shape can assist in enhancing the creative thought process. It may assist in unblocking and removing any emotional stressors that have cut off the creative energies. The Icosahedron is an amazing tool that teaches us to “go with the flow” allowing the freedom of expression, creation, and the challenge of change to move through us effortlessly.

Crystal Connections

You may find Platonic Solids individually, but more often than not, they come in a set with their own display box. While these shapes can be made of many types of minerals or crystals, the most common sets are ones made of Clear Quartz, Rose Quartz or Amethyst. These contain amazing energies that will suit many needs.

Quartz in general is a programmable stone and amplifies the properties of any crystal in its vicinity. Also used as a channeling crystal, it amplifies both body energy and thought. It assists in the creation of power and can provide for clarity in thinking to enable thoughts to more effectively influence matter. It can be used to transform thoughts into sound, producing the vibration associated with thought and effecting the environment with the discharged energy.

Rose Quartz is a stone of gentle love and peace. It is both calming and nurturing. Balances emotions and heals emotional wounds. It enhances all forms of love-self-love, mother love, caring, kindness, platonic, and romantic love. Opens our hearts and encourages us to be tender, peaceful and gentle. Emanates unconditional love and nurturance and helps us attract positive, gentle love into our lives. Teaches forgiveness and tolerance.

Amethyst is associated with spiritual awareness, meditation, balance, psychic abilities, inner peace, healing, and positive transformation. This stone brings an understanding of death and rebirth and relieves stress. Amethyst is a teacher of all things spiritual. This stone is very healing of body, mind and soul.

Closing
Each of these shapes, their elements and crystal energies, fit perfectly into the applications for natural healing, metaphysical studies and spiritual endeavors. Take time to work with each shape individually paying full attention to its aspects and attributes. You will be amazed at the work that can be done with these unique tools.
