My Single Terminated Crystals Are Growing Points On The Broken End. How Is This Possible?

I own a number of originally single-terminated large crystals which have ALL formed new crystalline points on their broken end to a greater or lesser degree over the 20-25 years I've had them and worked with them. By this I mean that the rough end gradually, over the course of years, "grew" into a field of numerous points- some with hundreds of tiny glittery points, others a surface of more organized, larger structured points of up to 1/4" each. How do they do that in the absence of water or other solution with nothing touching them but the air, household humidity, and me? A scientific answer would be SO SO SO appreciated! Thanks!

Hi B,
Thank you for your inquiry.  How wonderful to be able to witness your crystals growing!  You may find the following site helpful, as it covers what crystals need from their environment to grow from a scientific perspective, through a process called nucleation:
Essentially, "Crystals grow when the solubility of elements in a liquid phase is exceeded and they need to transform into a solid or the energy needed to keep them liquid is not sufficient."  (From:
Changes in temperature and pressure in a crystal's environment will also impact it's growth:
There could have been a lot of changes to your crystals' environment over the years that caused them to grow in the ways that they did.  You should be able to find a lot of information about these processes online, perhaps even some youtube videos could help as well.

I must share the standard disclaimer that I am not a doctor and cannot give out medical advice. Crystals for healing should be used as a complement to other therapies and not as a replacement for regular medical care.  The information offered here is based on a combination of my own personal experiences and that of others on using crystals for healing.  My hope is that you will let your own intuition guide your path in working with crystals as well.
