Get to Know Clear Quartz

By Deborah Gutteridge

Quartz is the second most common mineral on the Earth. Its chemical formula is SiO2, silicon dioxide. It is a hard, transparent to nearly opaque mineral, found as a component of a huge variety of rock types such as igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. Also known as Rock Crystal, Clear Quartz crystallizes in the form of masses, grains, druses, and prismatic hexagonal crystals. It comes in an extensive range of varieties such as agate and jasper. Formations of Clear Quartz are colored by impurities, which have their own names, such as Amethyst, Citrine, and Smokey Quartz.

You'll always know Clear Quartz by four things:
1.  Clear Quartz has a glassy luster.
2.  Clear Quartz is hardness 7 on the Mohs scale, scratching all types of steel and ordinary glass.
3.  Clear Quartz exhibits conchoidal fractures, that is, it breaks into curved shards rather than flat-faced cleavage fragments.
4.  If found in crystals, Clear Quartz always has a hexagonal cross-section.

Historically, Native Peoples of most cultures used Clear Quartz extensively in diagnostic healing, spiritual development and communicating with spirits and those from other worlds. Quartz is an old German word that originally meant something like “hard” or “tough”. And the word crystal comes from the Greek word krystallos which means “ice” because it was believed to be water frozen so hard it could never thaw.

As it would take me longer than a paragraph to share all the ways we are able to utilize Clear Quartz, I can share an overview here. Clear Quartz is a “Power Stone”. It has been called the "Universal Crystal" because of its many uses and is said to bring the energy of the stars into the soul. The properties of Clear Quartz (piezoelectric and pyroelectric) enhance energy by supporting the amplification, focusing, balancing, storage, transfer, absorption and transformation of energy. Quartz also enhances thoughts, emotions and consciousness, as they are all a form of energy. A “stone of communication”, it facilitates the giving and receiving of information with minerals, plants, animals, spiritual teachers, masters and healers, and intelligent forces outside the physical dimension.

Because it directs and amplifies energy, it is extremely beneficial for manifesting, healing, meditation, protection, channeling and gridding. It is also beneficial for storing and retrieving information of all types, as information is a form of energy pattern also. This makes Clear Quartz particularly good for programming to use for a particular purpose. Due to its ability to balance, it is excellent for harmonizing and balancing one's environment. Quartz is also good for energizing other crystals, the aura and creating power - which is why it is also known as an “Amplifier”.

Whether this wonderful crystal is carried, worn, or placed in your environment, the power, the brilliance and the harmony remains attuned to the energy to which it is connected. If you only get one crystal, make it a Clear Quartz.
