Crystals for the Seasons

By Deb Gutteridge

Over the centuries many correspondences have been made to the gem and crystal world. There are stones for every planet, zodiac sign, chakra, season, day, hour, etc. This month I would like to share some of the work of George Frederick Kunz. In his book, The Curious Lore of Precious Stones, Kunz explains that each crystal - and the corresponding season of the year it embodies - brings us its special gifts and challenges. This article will list associated crystals, and suggest ways to use them each season.

Spring

The word spring brings to mind the season and images of rebirth, rejuvenation, renewal, resurrection and regrowth. We think of nature blossoming and coming to life. On the spring equinox the Earth’s poles are the same distance from the Sun. On this day there are roughly 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night, with day length increasing as the season progresses. Kunz tells us that the stones for spring are Amethyst, Chrysoberyl, Emerald, Green Diamond, Peridot(Olivine), Pink Topaz, and Spinel.  A couple of ways to utilize your crystals include programming some crystals to assist you to allow new things into your life. Imagine what you would like to create in your life and find ways to make plans to realize these dreams. Another way to use your crystals is by creating order out of chaos by going through your home and/or office and getting rid of things you no longer need. To keep healthy and joyful during spring, get outside, take long walks in nature and observe the changes going on all around you. Carry or wear your crystals wherever you go.

Summer

Summer is traditionally associated with hot weather, fun outdoors and growth. People take advantage of the warmer temperatures by enjoying more time outdoors during the summer. Kunz tells us Alexandrite, Fire Opal,Garnet, Pink Topaz, Ruby,Spinel, and Zirconare the stones for summer.  As summer is a time for play and relaxation, make sure to create time each day to “de-stress”. Take a few minutes to just sit and breathe. Have a relaxing bath with your crystals. It is important that you rehydrate. Drink lots of pure, fresh water infused with your crystals’ energy. Your body will thank you. Information on how to infuse watercan be found in our articles.

Autumn

Known as fall in the US and Canada, autumn is when the arrival of night becomes noticeably earlier and the temperature cools considerably. We notice the transition from summer into winter. A main feature is the shedding of leaves from deciduous trees as they pave way for further growth. It is the time for harvesting the crops to see us through the winter. The autumn gems, as suggested by Kunz, include Adamantine Spar, Chrysoberyl, Sapphire, Topaz, Tourmaline and Zircon. In autumn remember to meditate or pray, holding your crystals. This is the time of year when spirit is more accessible. Request assistance from your crystals. Practice letting go. Release old resentments or hurts and start anew.

Winter

Winter is associated with snow, freezing temperatures, and staying warm in front of a fire.  It’s the time for resting, while nature goes into dormancy or hibernation.  At the winter solstice, the days are the shortest and the nights longest.  Clear Quartz,Diamond, Labradorite, Moonstone, Pearl,White Sapphire, and Turquoise are the gems of winter according to Kunz. To keep toasty and peaceful during winter, take time to listen and recharge your body, and to replenish your reserves, which will be needed during the surges of spring. Winter is a time to recharge; so learn to listen to what others have to say and listen to your heart speaking to you. Be patient. Meditate with your crystals and listen to your higher self. As winter is a time to go within, your inner being comes closer to the surface in winter, let your crystals guide you. Don’t be afraid of your darker side; let any and all images unfold. Keep a journal and record your feelings, thoughts, and dreams: don’t analyze them, just record them. Look at them again later and see if the images convey an inner message to you.

Well, I hope that gives you some ideas to utilize through the seasons. The changing seasons always signal the end of one type of adventure and the beginning of another, and our crystal friends will always be there to assist our voyage through life. Enjoy!
