Amethyst is a violet to deep purple form of Quartz.  Its color varies according to the heat, or the natural radiation of the iron inclusions in the Quartz.  Amethyst is a common form of Quartz, being found in many places throughout the world.  In chemical composition, Amethyst is very similar to Smoky Quartz and Citrine; heat-treated Amethyst is often sold as Citrine, Lemon Quartz or Green Quartz.  The temperature of the solution causes the variations in colors as the crystals formed.  A rare form of Amethyst called Red Amethyst is caused by addition of Hematite inclusions.  

Amethyst is second only to Clear Quartz as the workhorse of the crystal world. Amethyst is called the stone of spirituality and is said to raise the lower level frequencies to higher vibration.  Amethyst at the third eye is said to activate the pineal gland and there by activating psychic gifts.  It is a powerful healer, enhancing all modalities of energy healing.   Working at the throat, brow and crown chakras, Amethyst can connect our communication to our higher self and the higher planes. Amethyst is a stone of dreams preventing, insomnia, chasing away nightmares and bringing peaceful sleep.   Amethyst has the ability to help us control our dreams, teaching lucid dreaming.  It is also the stone of prophecy, promoting prophetic dreams.

Popular as a gemstone in ancient times Amethyst at one time was considered as valuable as Diamond, Sapphire and Ruby.  It is the only stone considered having no negative connotations or side effects.  The peaceful vibrations of Amethyst are calming and de-stressing.  Its ability to bring hope to hopeless situations promotes a sense of spirituality that supersedes the physical realm.

Long considered a valuable component in magic spells and rituals, Amethyst was a tool found on the altar of magic workers. It was used in love spells, abundance spells, divination, and truth spells. It was the stone of the poor and Royalty, protected during travel, prevented death in battle and identified thieves. 

In divination Amethyst can indicate a shift in consciousness opening the holder to higher vibrations and enhancing the ability to see beyond the physical and into the higher realms making the Amethyst a good stone for scrying as a crystal ball.

In healing Amethyst is an all-around healer; it can be used to boost the immune system to strengthen the body. Amethyst is used to treat addiction to alcohol and alcoholism.  Amethyst is also an aura stone; by running a crystal several inches above the body, you are cleansing, healing holes and protecting the aura. An Amethyst pendulum can be used to scan the body before healing to indicate energy blocks, places of illness and can be used to balance, align and connect the throat, brow and crown chakras.  When combined with rose quartz it promotes selflessness and unconditional love.
