Stepping Stones to Crystal Basics

Beginning your journey with crystals can be confusing and a little overwhelming; it seems there are so many crystals, and so much to learn!  Many of us, when first starting to learn about crystals will be utterly engrossed: finding books about crystals, and reading up on the pieces you already have, while making lists of the stones you feel you should be adding to your collection.

For the beginning collector, there are also questions about how to care for your new collection, and how to use them.  Collected here are some of the most commonly asked questions about caring for your crystals.


Question: How should I carry my stones?

Answer: Any way you would like.

Jewelry -- A nurse friend did not want to call attention to herself as one of “those people" at work. She would wear pretty crystal earrings, a stone bracelet or a gemstone pendant. Wearing crystal jewelry allowed her to discreetly keep the crystal energy around her at all times without being judged by her closed-minded coworkers. To be most effective, stones should touch the skin and wearing jewelry is a perfect way in which to do this.

Clothing -- A friend once told me she always carried stones with her to work... in her bra! She laughingly told me that if she put them in her pocket, she had a tendency to lose them, else she would take them out and forget where she had put them. I have known men to stick a stone in their sock.

Alternatively, you can use a small pouch for your stones. Silk and/or velveteen are my favorites. The pouch can go in your pants pocket or jacket, and your crystals are less likely to fall out when they are in a pouch too.

Bowl of Crystals -- A friend of mine used to work at a men's correctional facility. She began putting a bowl of tumbled stones on her desk. She soon noticed that she was much calmer and less stressed at work, but also that the inmates were drawn to her bowl of stones and would often choose a stone as they were talking to her. Shortly after, she began gifting the stone of choice to the inmate that chose it.

Another longtime friend had a bowl of stones on a table close to her door. Before she left each day, she would choose one stone and give an intention to the stone. The stone went into her pocket and off she would go to work as a social worker. For example, if she chose Rose Quartz as her "Stone of the Day", she would say something to the effect of, "Today, I carry with me the loving energy of Rose Quartz. My intention is to show love to everyone I meet this day." If someone was upset and yelled at her, she could put her hand in her pocket and hold the stone, reminding herself of the intent she had chosen, and loving energies of the rose quartz. If she heard gossip from coworkers, she would walk away and again touch the stone to remind herself of her intention.


Question: Is it alright to carry more than one stone at one time? Will they all "get along"?

Answer: Absolutely!

I know of friends who carry pockets full of stones, wear stone jewelry, have stones in the car and on their desk at work — all at the same time! How few or how many stones you carry is truly a personal preference.

And yes, all the crystals will "get along" just fine. Crystals are full of loving, divine energy; they work in concert with each other — always.

Care should be taken though to make sure that if you are carrying more than one stone in your pocket, that they are not a mix of softer stones like Selenite, Celestite or Calcite and harder stones. The softer stones may get chipped, dented or dinged by the harder stones.


Question: How long should I carry a stone for the maximum healing effect?

Answer: You can carry your stones for as long as you wish, or as long as you feel they are still working for you.

Many times, folks will change out their crystals, choosing to carry one or a few for one week and then making a different selection for the next week, etc. If you want to carry the same stone(s), I would recommend cleaning them at the end of the week to remove any energy they have stored up. Use your favorite cleansing technique, and reprogram them with your intentions so they are ready for the following week.


Question: Why do I need to clean (cleanse) my crystals?

Answer: Crystals absorb the energy around them. Cleaning is a way to remove the dense, negative energy that accumulates within.

Crystals absorb your energy and the energy around them. They comfort you when you are sad, angry, hurt, ill, etc. Sometimes, they just need a good cleaning to remove all of this dense energy (negativity, illness, sadness, etc) to make them new and fresh again.


Question: How often should I clean my crystals?

Answer: When you "feel" they are no longer working well. They may feel dense or less energetic.

My best answer is let your intuition be your guide. However, if you are just starting out and do not yet completely trust your intuition, here is a good guideline.  If you use a stone daily, it should be cleaned once a week. If used once or twice a week, clean monthly. If the stone has been placed in your home, sacred space or healing room to be used to collect negative or unwanted energies, once a month will be fine. If you feel it needs to be done sooner than that, then follow your intuition.

Question: What exactly does programming a crystal mean?

Answer: For me, it is simply placing your intent into the crystal.

The ritual can be as detailed or as simple as you like. I have been known to simply hold the crystal and say, "I could really use your help with something."

Question: What crystals should I start my collection with?

Answer: There are no wrong crystals!

As long as you are comfortable listening to your intuition, choosing crystals you are simply drawn to is absolutely fine… there are no wrong crystals.  When choosing a crystal, hold it in your hand and see how it "feels". Does your hand tingle or feel warm? Using your intuition and choosing those that you are drawn to is exactly right.

It is also okay to research by metaphysical property, color or availability. 


Question: What crystals are good for a beginner’s collection?

Answer: Although there are no wrong crystals, it is good to have a range of healing crystals.

Although there are no wrong crystals for a beginner’s collection, it is nice to build a collection on some good "all-round" stones.  Some basic recommendations include Clear Quartz (a good all-around healer), Amber (protection),  Hematite (grounding), Malachite (healing), Amethyst (consciousness), Black Tourmaline (protection), Rose Quartz (for healing and unconditional love), Lapis Lazuli (intuition), and Carnelian (creativity and harmony).

ORGONE - What is it?  How does it work?

Orgone energy was an idea that was originally proposed and promoted by Dr. Wilhelm Reich in the 1930s. This form of energy is often better known as universal life force or chi; Dr. Reich ultimately felt that Orgone could best be described as a massless, omnipresent force. Dr. Reich worked extensively with Orgone and felt that this energy could be harnessed and used in a variety of ways. It has subsequently been used for therapeutic healing, and also in devices known as Cloudbusters. These Cloudbusters use harnessed Orgone energy to stimulate rainfall, or to disperse harmful chemtrails. This amazing energy can be found everywhere — from the smallest microscopic units to massive structures such as huge clouds or even entire galaxies of this life force energy.

I must admit, before taking on this article, I knew little to nothing about Orgone, what it was or how it worked. I was fortunate enough to be able to talk at length with two researchers of Orgone, Ross Purvine and Don Croft. 

Ross Purvine has long researched the effects of Orgone, and its positive benefits on the atmosphere, including its use as a Cloudbuster and for eliminating chemtrails.

Don Croft, with his wife Carol Croft, after studying Orgone extensively on the Internet, worked with a substance called Orgonite, a combination of catalyzed organic fiberglass resin with inorganic metal shavings. Orgonite was first created in 1991, but was further developed in 2000 by Carol Croft with the addition of crystals; this mixture of resin, metal shavings and crystals created an effective device to collect, transmute and emit beneficial Orgone energy.

Kristi: What exactly is Orgone?
Don Croft: Orgone is the term that Dr. Wilhelm Reich introduced in the late 1930s for the same phenomenon that is traditionally described as prana, ch'i, animal magnetism, life force, ether, etc today. 
Ross Purvine: Orgone is the blue hue around all things. Amazingly enough, the blue sky is Orgone! Orgone energy enhances the life force of everyone and everything around it — plants, animals, insects, the whole planet.

Kristi: I have read and heard the name Reich mentioned often in various YouTube videos and written articles. Is he considered the "Father" of Orgone?
Don: He is; Dr. Reich was Sigmund Freud's protégé until the former began curing mental illness in the 1920s, after which Freud blackballed him. Einstein was also initially excited by Reich’s evidence of the existence of the ether, but then he too blackballed Reich, evidently because his own work denied the influence of this ether (Orgone) on physics. Reich was wrongfully imprisoned, and then evidently murdered by the US Government in the 1950s after which his legacy was erased from public record.  We like to honor him by using some of his terminology and we credit him with providing the basis for subsequent discoveries in this new science: the exploration of subtle energies.

Kristi: How does Orgone work?
Don: Orgone seems to be the underlying, vital matrix of the physical universe — a mostly untapped reservoir in terms of human technology.

Kristi: What can Orgone do to help us? It is reported that Orgone has been used to transform the environment, improve weather, and improve plant growth and the quality of water. It helps to dissolve harmful chemtrails and mitigate the harmful effects of EMF and EMR radiation.
Ross: If you put Orgonite (the mixture of resin, metal shavings and crystals, which helps harness and emit Orgone) in your garden, the Orgonite actually repels the harmful pests and weeds and gives you a huge luscious garden. The most popular use for Orgone is to break up harmful chemtrails. The earth is being bombarded with heavy spraying by jet planes. These long white trails criss-cross in a web pattern, like the Hopi prophesized about with 'spider webs in the sky'. This spraying has earned the term 'chemtrails'. Sylphs, or cloud angels, are a healthy result of having a Cloudbuster. Since I put my Chembuster on the patio, I now see the Sylphs go into action immediately breaking up and dissolving the chemtrails almost as quickly as they are being made whenever the jets fly by, spraying their toxic brew upon the neighborhood. It's almost as if the sylphs are alive and protecting the whole space above me and my chemtrail buster. It's fascinating to see.

(I was fascinated by the work of Don and Carol working with quartz crystals in Orgonite.  This combination greatly increases its useful range against the negative radiation from cell towers. Being a crystal lover, I wanted to know more).

Kristi: Is there a specific type of quartz crystal that you recommend using in Orgonite? Does quartz from one location better than another? (Tibet? Lusa? Brazil?)
Don: The use of specific gems, crystals, coil forms, metals and shapes in Orgonite is for personal, interactive items. Carol maintains a blog site to tell how to combine various gems and other components to create certain healing effects, to enhance awareness, provide protection, encourage prosperity, and so on:  crystalinsights.net. The sky is the limit for this, since Orgonite (the simple combination of metal particles and catalyzed resin) enhances and even multiplies the effects of these components. A talented person, or someone following the instructions of a talented individual, can achieve phenomenal results with this 'interactive' Orgonite.

Kristi: How does one know that Orgone is working? I have seen a few YouTube videos that show Cloudbusters breaking up clouds, but are there other physical manifestations one needs to be aware of?
Don: This is mainly felt. Since Orgone is subtle energy, the mind cannot understand the effects but the heart and body can. Sometimes the effects are visual, as when Orgonite devices are used to clear the smog from a major city (examples of this are Los Angeles, Tokyo, London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Mexico City, Toronto, Santiago, New York, Miami, and Chicago) or when a desert has been reversed, as happened in the Kalahari six years ago. One can also clear up polluted water — it takes a week or so to see the water become clean — such as was done along many polluted coasts in Europe, North America, South America and Asia, and some of the American Great Lakes.
A simple test is to put an Orgonite device under one's nose and experience an immediate expansion of the lungs. It's also useful to hide Orgonite in an emotionally toxic work or home environment and notice the immediate improvement in ambiance and behavior.

Kristi: Can Orgone be harmful in any way — to humans, animals, plants, etc?
Don: This material is absolutely harmless. There are variations of Orgone, though, that are harmful such as the dark energy that's broadcast from the 'death towers' and weather warfare apparatuses around the planet. All of this is easily transformed into life force-generating transmitters with some Orgonite, placed nearby.  Many thousands of people are doing this now. Ethericwarriors.com is set up to record some of this work, and also to inform and inspire people to get busy with it. People who see subtle energy as auras note the many colors it can affect. The more harmful forms of Orgone are seen as reddish, to brown and even black; when you see smog, you are seeing the effects of this. Orgonite changes that into healthy life force, which some see mainly as sky blue. Variations of the healthier Orgone are also seen as green, indigo and violet.
 
Kristi: Don, I believe I read the Chembuster is of your own design.  How does this differ from the Cloudbuster? Or does it?
Don: Carol and I designed the first Orgonite Cloudbuster in December 2000, and built it a couple of months later (we never liked the term, 'Chembuster').  Within a couple of years, many thousands of people had built or bought an Orgonite Cloudbuster.  We gave the design away because we wanted the information to be disseminated quickly.  Enough people were upset about the chemtrails in those days that enough of these were built over a wide enough area to essentially neutralize that poisonous campaign. You still see chemtrails but it's obvious that they don't come to the ground any more, but merely seed long clouds that drift across the sky until they dissipate."

And finally, I wanted first hand knowledge from someone who has created their own Orgone pyramids and Cloudbusters, so I asked Ross to share some of his experiences.

Ross: I had an Orgone pyramid I made; it only has about a 5" base, but to me it’s big. One night I decided to sleep with my pyramid right next to me in bed. When I woke the next morning, my eyes were still closed and I could feel the pulsing of my pyramid next to me. It was like a heartbeat I could feel and hear, but it made no sound. Now I am sure it was my heartbeat the pyramid was synchronizing to, sending me healing energy. I think it’s brought me up in vibration because I don't feel that pulse anymore. This Orgone pyramid has Tiger Iron and Carnelian mostly, and one Selenite also for keeping it powered up. Carnelian keeps fear and anger away and keeps the unit clear, and the Tiger Eye is fantastic for character strength. Tiger Iron is made up of three stones. One of those stones is Hematite, a very protective stone that dispels any negativity coming from the outside.

Despite the title, the archangels in this last installment of this series are by no means less important than the previous, greater archangels. The lesser archangels are still powerful beings in their own right. They are angels of specific energy forms and inspirational guides. Although their numbers vary, the following are the most common: Ariel, Azrael, Haniel, Metatron, Raguel, Raziel and Sandalphon. Some, like Metatron and his twin brother, Sandalphon, used to be human. Some of these angels have ruling planets while others, such as Raguel, rule weather phenomena. Each of the archangels however, has crystals associated with him/her. Be sure to click on the crystal's name to obtain further information.  

1.  Ariel is the archangel of Nature. This is another archangel who may be male or female. My intuition is going with female, but you can decide for yourself. Ariel means “Lion of God” and she is ruled by Saturn, the element of air and is best called upon on Saturday. Ariel heals animals, both wild and domestic, and generally all of nature. She is guardian over the nature spirits, such as faeries and elves, sylphs and undines. Ariel's associated crystals are Apatite, Agate (especially moss and tree agates) and Jasper (such as the leopardskin and dalmatian varieties). She is patron of veterinarians, breeders, archaeologists, civil engineers, and animal rescue workers.  

2.  Azrael is the angel of life's natural cycles – living and dying – and of journeys. He is ruled by Tuesday, the planet Mars and the element of earth. Azrael's name means “Whom God helps” and he is most often helpful during times of grief and bereavement. Crystals associated with Azrael are Yellow Calcite, Amethyst, and Purple Fluorite.  

3.  Haniel rules Fridays and the planet Venus, as well as the element of water. Haniel's name means “Glory of God” and he is the angel of the West wind, growth, love and healing (especially alternative medicine). He can be called upon for matters dealing with children, marriage, artistic endeavors, natural preservation and music. Haniel's crystals are Rose Quartz, Pink Calcite and Chrysoprase.

 4.  Metatron, who was formally the prophet Enoch, is now head of the Akashic Records, or God's archives. He is the angel of Thought. Metatron rules Sundays, the element of Fire and the planets Pluto or the Sun. He presides over all our guardian angels and often appears with a scroll and pen. Metatron, though an imposing angel, is quite gentle, often helping children who have passed over. He may be called upon when you are changing to a new path in life, learning opportunities, and helping children with learning disabilities. Crystals linked to Metatron are Sardonyx (which is banded onyx), Mahogany Obsidian and Red or Orange Aventurine.  

5.  Raguel is the archangel of snow and ice. He also governs the behavior of the other angels. He carries a flaming sword that he may use to melt the snows of winter. Raguel's name means “Friend of God” and he creates harmony and understanding in relationships that may be experiencing discord. Raguel's crystals is Milky Quartz and Moonstone. 

6.  Raziel is the archangel of Secrets and the mysteries of life. His name means “Secret of God” and he is guardian over mystical knowledge. He often appears in shadow, as a misty fog and may be called upon for psychic learning, dream interpretation, the cause or root of an illness, spiritual understanding and using natural resources wisely. Raziel's planet is Neptune, his day of the week is Saturday and his element is Air. Raziel is patron of astrologers, scientists, clairvoyants, and even Secret Service workers.  His crystals are Peridot, Apache Tears, and Aqua Aura Crystals. 

7.  Sandalphon was Metatron's twin brother, the prophet Elijah. His name means “Brother” and he is considered one of the Seraphim. Sandalphon is the archangel of Power and he oversees strength, prosperity and beauty. He gives us the joy of living and is also given the task of looking after unborn children. He may be called upon for issues concerning pregnancy, fertility and birth. Sandalphon also helps release emotional blocks, fear, guilt and aggressive tendencies. This angel is the patron of musicians, journalists, nurses, pediatricians and midwives. The planet Jupiter rules this archangel, as does the element of earth. His day is Thursday and crystals linked to Sandalphon are Turquoise and Calcite (any variety). 

I hope that you enjoyed our walk through the angelic realm of the archangels. It was quite a challenge for me, but the knowledge I gained in writing this series has been invaluable. If you're like me, you'll be keeping sticky notes all over about which crystal is linked to which archangel, etc. Remember this, though: if you don't yet have a particular crystal, don't panic. Clear Quartz crystal is a fine substitute. And always go with your “gut” feeling.  

Asking the angels for help is something that brings them joy. It is, essentially, what they are here to do. And if you call upon an angel on a day of the week other than what is attributed to him/her, it doesn't matter all that much. After all, our concerns, illnesses, problems and fears don't pick a particular day of the week to manifest. If you want to call on an angel, please do so. And if you happen to see a feather on the sidewalk as you go to pick up your mail; a penny sitting on the basement stairs; a ringing in one ear or, as my son claimed recently, the fleeting “smell of maple syrup”, then the angels are listening and perhaps they have something to say. Sit down, get comfortable, be quiet and listen....

The last stop on our angelic tour brings us to Archangel Zadkiel (sometimes written as Tzadkiel, Zachiel or Zedkiel), the angel of comfort, prayer and abundance. He is the gentlest of the archangels and his name means “Righteousness of God”. Zadkiel rules the planet Jupiter and the element of air. His colors are sky blue or violet and his day of the week is Thursday. Scents affiliated with Zadkiel include sandalwood, ylang ylang, bergamot, rosemary and nutmeg. His flower is the violet. Crystals associated with this kind but brave angel include Blue Lace Agate, Amethyst, Blue Chalcedony and Lapis Lazuli.

You can invoke the aid of archangel Zadkiel when you feel despair, depressed and in need. His is often depicted holding a dagger and is surrounded by a blue or violet light. Zadkiel is especially fond of children and will often come to their aide. He may also be called upon for abundance (be it spiritual or material), improving memory, seeking forgiveness from others who have wronged us, and achieving justice. He guides those in the alternative-medicine fields, such as aromatherapists, reiki masters, and   masseurs, as well as librarians, interpreters, cashiers and psychiatrists.  

Although linked to Neptune, Blue Lace Agate is considered both a water and air stone. It is a crystal of Zadkiel's because of its gentle ability to distill calm, peaceful energy. This banded pale blue agate is useful in reducing stress, lowering blood pressure, relieving headaches and alleviating painful joints and bones. It is a peace keeping stone which, if placed in your home, will eradicate negative energies and keep conversations from becoming confrontational. I keep two of these stones on our kitchen table, and have found that, with two teenage sons and an Italian husband, dinnertime has become much more agreeable and even fun again. And, because of my osteoarthritis, I also keep one in my pocket on those days when I feel my hips getting painful.  

Amethyst is another crystal ruled by the air element. This purple crystal is a powerful healing stone for the mind as well as the body. It's also a calming stone, bringing restful sleep, relief from tension headaches, migraines and eyestrain. Amethyst can ease stressful situations and even calms hyperactive pets. It's been a stone of royalty for centuries, used to bring about prosperity. Place an amethyst under a child's pillow (or, for small children, under the mattress) to keep nightmares at bay.  

Blue Chalcedony is a soft blue crystal useful in telepathy, whether it's used for communicating with animals, plants or spirit guides. Physically, it helps with seasonal allergies, kidney and gall stones, and fluid retention. It's a learning stone, aiding us in tackling a new language or understanding complex technologies, such as computers (wish I knew this ten years ago).  

Lapis Lazuli is a stone of Jupiter and the air element. This royal blue crystal has been used for centuries, from the Ancient Egyptians to Native Americans for its wonderful healing benefits. It's also a stone of wisdom and increases psychic awareness and protection. Lapis calms an excited household and, in healing practices, it relieves pain and inflammation, especially of the nervous system. It instills it's wearer with a burst of self-confidence and the courage to meet life's little challenges.

Our next visitation brings us to Archangel Jophiel (also written as Iophiel or Zaphiel), the angel of Creative power and Illumination. His name means “beauty of God” and he sometimes appears as a very tall angel (over 9 feet) wearing a yellow cloak and carrying a flaming sword. Jophiel is another guardian over the Tree of Knowledge, alongside Uriel. He is the archangel of artists, craftspeople, researchers, inventors, builders, film-makers, bakers and photographers.

Jophiel's ruling planet is Mercury and the element of Air. His day is Wednesday and his color is deep yellow. Scents given to Jophiel are lavender, orange, myrrh, and lemongrass. Crystals associated with archangel include Ametrine, Smoky Quartz and Rutilated Quartz.

Call upon archangel Jophiel when you need help learning something new, especially with spiritual matters. When you need inspiration, Jophiel is the one to ask. He also helps us realize untapped abilities we never even knew we had. Jophiel can “unjumble” the chaos that sometimes overwhelms our minds, bringing about clearer thoughts and more organized ways of thinking. Jophiel also aides those who fight for environmental issues and wish to bring about change in the world.

Ametrine is actually an usual combination crystal that is composed of amethyst and citrine. It is purple and yellow and helps to increase creativity as well as improve your focus. It can help with spiritual awareness, aiding in angelic and spirit guide communication (even animal spirit guides). Great for workaholics, ametrine helps rebalance your life between home, work and spirit. In healing practices, ametrine reduces cravings, such as nicotine, and replaces negative energy with positive.

Smoky Quartz is a translucent, smoky brown variety of quartz crystal. Despite the fact that it is linked to Saturn and the earth element, smoky quartz is associated with archangel Jophiel because of its ability to release negative energy from your body back into the earth, making you feel more “in the moment” and at peace. It brings optimism and protects you from electromagnetic fields. It is said to relieve both physical and mental blocks. Smoky quartz can also alleviate lower back, hip and leg pain.

Rutilated Quartz (see also Archangel Uriel) is clear quartz with yellow bands, or rutiles on the inside of the crystal. It a crystal of the Sun and the fire element, but its link to Jophiel is in the way it encourages us to explore new possibilities. If you're looking to make a change in your life, rutilated quartz will enable you to unleash all those untapped abilities, therefore letting you open yourself up to new opportunities and ideas. It is an excellent crystal to use when calling angels and spirit guides.

The next Archangel on our tour of the angelic realm is Archangel Chamuel, the archangel of adoration and courage. His name means “He who seeks God” and he is ruled by the planet Mars, the element of fire and the zodiac sign of Aries. His day is Tuesday and his colors are ruby red or pale green. Chamuel often appears wearing armor. His scents include mint, geranium, neroli and ginger. Crystals often associated with Chamuel are Red Jasper, Bloodstone, Carnelian and Pink Tourmaline. 

Call on Chamuel when you feel yourself beginning to feel a bit of self-loathing or if you're spreading yourself too thin, always doing for everyone else before yourself. Chamuel will help you to adore yourself and practice a bit of self-love. It's alright to take some time for yourself. Chamuel is also an angel of peace and divine justice. He guards the innocent and gives us strength to overcome. He is the patron of surgeons, air traffic controllers, hairdressers, animal conservationists and those
involved in peacekeeping missions.  

Red Jasper is an opaque form of chalcedony and it has an earthy red coloring, much like red clay. It is a stone of Mars and the element of fire. It is also a stone for the zodiac sign of Aries. Red jasper was often called the warrior's stone, as it was thought to bring strength and courage to those who wore it. Likewise, it has been used as a symbol of fertility. Native Americans consider it a sacred stone, for red jasper was thought to be the blood of the earth. In healing practices, it regulates the blood and its circulation, thus bringing warmth to those cold hands and feet. Red jasper is also an
energy stone, bringing you a sense of vigor and vitality. In magical uses, it can be used to send negative energy back to the sender, offering you protection from harm, be it psychic or physical.  

Bloodstone is another of archangel Chamuel's stones that can be helpful in cleansing the blood. It is a deep green stone with flecks of red and is also associated with Mars, Aries and the fire element. In healing, bloodstone is often used for liver, kidney, intestine, and bone marrow problems. This powerful healing stone is also beneficial for women's issues such as menstruation and menopausal symptoms. Bloodstone is also an excellent stone for athletes and anyone who could use a little more stamina during physical activity. Bloodstone also encourages you to believe in yourself and helps give you the courage to achieve your goals.  

Another red stone linked to Chamuel is Carnelian, also associated with the element of fire. This stone is more translucent than red jasper, and not as deep in coloring. Still, it's a powerful protection stone, giving you added courage and strength. Like the bloodstone, carnelian is a blood-cleanser and can also speed recovery time from illness or injury. Carnelian can also give you the courage to be yourself, rather than living by everyone else's expectations. This red stone can also bring success
and luck, especially in business ventures. It protects your home from fire, storms and other dangers. 

Pink Tourmaline is affiliated with Chamuel because of its ability to relieve us of past fears and pain, thus enabling us to get rid of bad patterns and move forward, better able to love who you are. This lovely pink form of tourmaline is also used to channel or communicate with spirit guides and also protects against negativity. In healing, it helps with chronic lung ailments, relieves coughs, eases anxiety and reduces stress.

Crystals to help connect with Archangel Uriel

I'll admit that, in doing research for archangel Uriel, there was quite a bit of conflicting information. Some references stated that Uriel was ruler of the planet Mars, while others mentioned Uranus. Some said he ruled over winter, others summer. Days of the week were either Tuesday or Wednesday. Naturally, it gave me a headache, not to mention a bit of a panic attack. I mean, really, how were people supposed to use this as a reference if the information is so contradictory? I worry about things like this. So, I sat quietly and asked Uriel for some help. I kept getting the same answer repeatedly, in my head, “Include it all and let them choose.” That said, I will leave it up to you to decide what feels right to you.  

Archangel Uriel is, indeed, the angel of transformation. His name means “the fire of God” and his direction is North. He usually appears carrying a flaming sword. Scents associated with Uriel are sandalwood, ginger and basil, and his flowers are the gentian and red hot poker. His color is red and the crystals affiliated with him are Hematite, Obsidian, Tiger's Eye and Rutilated Quartz.   

Archangel Uriel is linked to the arts, magic, ideas, astrology and protection. He is adept at turning our negative emotions, such as anger, fear and despair into positive feelings that will enable us to be stronger and therefore better equipped to bring about positive change in our lives or situations. He is the one that can take adversity and turn it into blessings. When you need change, call upon Uriel; for inspiration, spiritual guidance and discovering your own true potential.  

Hematite is ruled by fire and the planet Mars. It can be used for astral travel by grounding you this earth plane. It's an incredibly powerful stone for self-healing purposes, especially when held over or rubbed against a painful or inflicted area, as it can draw out the pain or infection. This silvery-black stone cleans the blood, strengthens muscles and lowers blood pressure. It is often used as a grounding stone and can dispel negativity.  

Another black crystal linked to Uriel is Obsidian, which is actually a form of volcanic glass, and so is linked to the element of fire. Also a grounding stone, obsidian is usually placed between the feet in chakra layouts. It's a protective stone, especially against negative psychic energy and those associated with electromagnetic fields. It's always a good idea to keep one near a computer (along with malachite).  

Tiger's Eye, with it's gleaming bands of honey-gold and brown, is a stone of prosperity, luck and money. It can alleviate cravings, such as those associated with tobacco, alcohol, drugs and even food. It detoxifies the body and can give you an added boost of energy during times of weakness or physical exhaustion. Tiger's eye is linked to the Sun and the element of fire.  

Rutilated Quartz is quartz crystal with bands, or rutiles, of yellow inside. It is an excellent crystal to have when you want to contact your guardian angels or communicate with others in the spirit or angelic realms. It is also used to enhance telepathy and clairvoyance. In healing practices, rutilated quartz may benefit those suffering from chronic bronchitis or asthma. It strengthens our auras and cleanses our systems.

Crystals to help connect with Archangel Raphael

Raphael is the archangel of healing and knowledge. His name means “God heals” and he often appears carrying a medicine jar and a staff, or walking stick, as he is also the patron of travelers. He is usually surrounded by a glowing green aura. Raphael is ruler of the planet Mercury and the element of Air. His direction is East, his season is Spring, and his day of the week is Wednesday. Raphael's colors are yellow and green. Scents associated with Raphael are lavender, lily of the valley, mint, bergamot and thyme. His flower is the Iris.  Raphael rules the air signs of the zodiac – Aquarius, Libra and Gemini. Crystals linked to this healing archangel include Malachite, Citrine, Aventurine and Yellow Calcite.

Raphael may be called upon, not only for healing, but safe travel (especially by air), new business ventures, purification, issues involving technology, written works, and buying or selling. He is particularly fond of children, so if you have a sick child, ask Raphael for healing help. He can also aide in memory improvement, exam-taking and learning a new language.

Malachite may be associated with Venus and the earth element, but because of its healing abilities, it has been linked to Raphael. This stunning, vibrant green gemstone has bands of deeper green, sometimes forming swirling patterns. As a healing stone, it is helpful in recharging the immune system, relieving migraines and strengthening the heart. Malachite can also be used to attract luck and money and is also an invaluable stone at home or work to shield us from harmful electromagnetic fields, such as those from electronics or telephone poles.

Citrine is a crystal of Mercury and the air element. In healing practices, it can be used for allergies, skin problems and digestive issues. This pale yellow crystal can also be used during meditation and visualization, making your thoughts and dreams become reality. Citrine can be a powerful prosperity crystal as well.

Aventurine  is another green stone associated with Raphael because of its healing attributes. It heals the eyes and helps with anxiety as well as heart palpitations. Aventurine is also a prosperity stone, often referred to as “the gambler's stone” for it brings luck, especially in games of chance. It can aide in clairvoyance, psychic dreaming and seeing into the future. Aventurine is well-liked by nature spirits, so leaving a small tumbled stone outdoors, perhaps by a tree or tucked into a flower pot, may keep faeries from behaving too mischievously.

Another yellow crystal affiliated with archangel Raphael is Yellow Calcite. This crystal is a gentle healer, often used for distance healing. It's also beneficial for painful joints, bones and muscles. It also releases stress, increases creativity and gives us a return back to that feeling known as “fun”. Yellow calcite is also called a wishing stone and may increase psychic awareness, prosperity and strength, be it spiritual or physical.

Gabriel is the archangel of the Moon and the element of water. Gabriel means “God has shown Himself mightily” and may appear as either male or female. Gabriel rules the West, autumn and Monday. Gabriel's colors are silver, white and pale blue, and his/her flowers are Lilies and Honesty. Scents associated with Gabriel are jasmine, rose, eucalyptus and myrrh. Signs of the zodiac ruled by Gabriel are Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio. Crystals that may be used in communicating with Gabriel include Moonstone, Aquamarine, Pearls and Selenite.  

Archangel Gabriel may be called upon to fulfill your dreams, bring your ideas into reality and give you courage to overcome your fears. Gabriel is associated with clairvoyance, magic, fertility, childbirth and domestic issues. As an archangel of water, Gabriel can aide in safe travel, especially over water. He/She can also help heal creatures of the water, protect against bad weather and help with problems relating to menstrual cycles (as these coincide with lunar phases).  

Moonstone gets its energy from the Moon, thus making it useful for increasing psychic power and dream remembrance. It is a powerful healing stone, especially for women's issues. Moonstone is also useful in the garden to encourage plant and flower growth. It also protects travelers, calms overactive children and keeps peace in the home.

Aquamarine is the stone of the sea and is ruled by Neptune.This pale, clear blue stone can help with clairvoyance, intuition and meditation. In healing practices, aquamarine alleviates tooth problems, colds, and even seasickness. It's a soothing crystal to have on hand during extreme anxiety or panic attacks. Aquamarine can be used during distance healing.  At home, this crystal can bring back loving communication between partners, and can be helpful with children, especially if they have a fear of water. Use this stone to attract business from overseas. 

Pearls, having come from the sea, are also associated with Gabriel. As with moonstone, pearls are ruled by the Moon.  They can increase love, either romantically or spiritually. Pearls can be used for prosperity and easing an overloaded mind. In healing, pearls can equalize hormonal rhythms with those of the moon and nature. They can also be helpful in removing the ties that bind us to overly-dominant people.  

Selenite, another moon and water crystal, is an excellent crystal to develop communication with spirit guides, angels and ancient ones. In healing, it is used to regulate fluid flowing throughout the body. It can also help our bodies absorb calcium (useful for those with osteoporosis, like myself). Selenite helps with communication between partners and family members and it can also help with telepathic animal communication.

Michael, whose name means “Who is like God” is the leader of archangels. He is usually depicted with a sword and sometimes a set of scales. Michael oversees the weather, agriculture (crops) and the entire natural world. With his sword, he can cut the ties that bind us to unhealthy people or things in our lives that we no longer need. Call on Michael for protection, releasing fear, doubt and negativity, and for strength and illumination. He is also called upon for prosperity and abundance.  

Michael is ruled by the Sun and the element of fire. His direction is South; his season is summer and his day is Sunday. Michael's colors include gold, yellow, orange and purple. Scents associated with Michael are chamomile, frankincense, rosemary and sage. His flower is the Marigold and he rules over the zodiac signs of Leo, Sagittarius and Aries. Crystals associated with Michael are Sugilite, Amber, Golden Topaz and Clear Quartz Crystal. 

Sugilite is a deep purple crystal and is used to aide in contacting spirit guides and angels. It is linked to the planet Jupiter and the element of water. It can heal energy blockages in your body, and is useful during mediation to develop an increased awareness of the spirit realms and help with astral travel. Sugilite is helpful in healing and gaining insightful wisdom.

Amber, though technically not a crystal but a fossilized tree resin, has been used for centuries to increase psychic powers, relieve anxiety and attract abundance. It is ruled by the Sun and the element of fire. In healing practices, amber can be used to encourage the body to self-heal. It is also used to bring protection, strength and passion.

Golden Topaz, like amber, is associated with the Sun, fire and the zodiac sign of Leo. This stunning yellow crystal is a stone of warmth. It can relieve arthritis symptoms, digestive ailments and even bouts of exhaustion. Golden topaz is also a stone of prosperity and abundance. Like sugilite, it can also be used for astral travel.

Clear Quartz Crystal is probably the most popular "all-purpose" crystal, as it will absorb energy from the sun and aide in healing, bringing energy and vitality to the body and spirit. It is an amplifier of pure energy and, as such, can channel the energy of spirit helpers and angels, creating greater power between us and the angelic realms. The longer you wear or carry this crystal, the more attuned to your body and thoughts it becomes. Clear quartz crystal is also beneficial when placed in the home, as it will promote peace and remove negative energy.

Crystals and Archangels

Introduction 

Angels are, in essence, energy. Celestial beings that are the messengers between the Divine and mankind. They are nondenominational and have been guiding us for centuries in every culture and on every continent. Angels transcend time and space, meaning that they can be at more than one place  at  a time. They often come to us in times of peril, grief and even great joy. They can be called upon to help us with almost any problem, no matter how trivial we may think it is.  

The archangels are the highest in the angelic hierarchy, which has nine tiers and includes angels, principalities, powers, virtues, dominions, thrones, cherubim and seraphim. Our very own guardian angels fall into the angel hierarchy. Archangels are those that rule different days of the week, seasons, planets, elements, and so on. Traditionally, there are seven major archangels – Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Chamuel, Jophiel and Zadkiel.  

Each of the archangels corresponds to certain crystal or gemstone energies. Crystals, after all, are of Earth's energy, and they can be excellent amplifiers and conductors of this energy, thus enabling us to communicate, heal and become more “in tune” with the angelic realm.  

As with any crystal, those listed with each of the archangels may not seem “right” to you. In these cases, it's best to go with your intuition and let the stones choose you. The crystals corresponding to each of the archangels are usually also associated with that angel's planet, element, or zodiac sign. If the first one on the list doesn't strike a chord with you, look to the others. For example, if you want to ask help from archangel Michael, and his crystals include amber or golden topaz, and these just don't cut it for you, then try clear quartz crystal or even the sugilite (even though this stone is associated with Jupiter, Air and the sign of Aquarius). Michael is associated with the Sun, so any crystal that is also linked to the Sun, such as citrine, carnelian, tiger's eye or sunstone with also work. Again, go with your gut feeling. Maybe you'd like to use the stones associated with Michael's zodiac signs of Leo, Aries or Sagittarius. That's fine too. As long as you're comfortable.  

So, what do you do with the crystals once you have them? It's really just up to you.  Be as creative as you want. Do what feels right to you. If you want to place a few tumbled crystals around a candle associated with a particular angel and ask for his/her aide, then go ahead. If you want to just carry them around in your pocket, or wear them as pendants on that angel's corresponding day of the week for some added comfort or protection, that's fine as well. If you feel comfortable meditating and using visualization to ask your petition, then hold the crystals in your hands or place them around a candle in front of you. There really is no set way, and the choices are endless. Use your imagination.  Even if you have just one crystal, that's all you need. Angels aren't picky, and if you can “feel” the energy from your crystal and are comfortable with it, then you are on the right path. Keep walking a bit further, and we'll look at the archangels and their corresponding crystals together. Come along!

JANUARY 2010 NEWSLETTER - Minerals and Mineral Classes Defined

Correctly identifying a rock from a crystal can be daunting.  Add in words like stone, mineral, gemstone, etc and many times what you have is confusion soup. When I first began working with crystals, EVERYTHING was a crystal (whether it geologically, scientifically, or accurately was or not).  I solved my lack of knowledge back then, by calling everything a "piece". "This piece is good for..."   This cloaked my lack of knowledge for a while.  My information on the "piece" was spot on, but my geological knowledge lacked tremendously.

Choosing to become more knowledgeable was not just a task I assigned myself at the time, it was imperative that I knew what I was talking about.  I was in the crystal business, I taught crystal classes.  I simply could not see myself teaching others if I did not understand the differences myself.   As I soon learned, it was not enough to understand the metaphysical aspects of these pieces, it was equally important to understand the geological aspects as well. And so, the quest began.

Let me share with you what I have learned about Minerals.

A mineral is (generally) an inorganic, naturally occurring, organized crystalline structure composed of a single chemical compound or element.  Let's break this down a bit more. 

There are four rules that define if a mineral:
1. Minerals must have a repetitive crystalline structure.
2. Minerals must have a determinable and precise formula.
3. Minerals must be natural.
4. Minerals must be inorganic.

So using this information, what do you think?
Is Amber a mineral?
Is Fluorite a mineral?
Is Moldavite a mineral?
How about Calcite?
Does Obsidian fit the criteria?

Let's break this down even further, step by step. I think you may be surprised :)

1. Minerals must have a repetitive crystalline structure.
What this tells us is that Minerals are classified as Crystals.  What is a crystal?
A crystal is a geometric solid that forms in a specific, repeating pattern.  Externally, the crystal is smooth and has an exacting symmetry which reflects the internal arrangement of its atoms.  When there is no specific repetitive structure, this is known as "Amorphous" and as such, cannot be identified as a mineral.  Obsidian, Jet, Amber, Fulgerites, Opal, and Tektites are all Amorphous meaning they cannot be classified as a Crystal and certainly not as a mineral.

2. Minerals must have a determinable and precise formula.
All minerals must have a precise formula.  This means that the chemical make up of the mineral must contain accurately measurable elements from the Periodic Table of Elements.  For instance, Silicon Dioxide(SiO2) is one part Silicon (Si) and two parts Oxygen (O2).  Some minerals, like Obsidian, cannot be accurately measured due to its creation process. Obsidian first comes into being with the occurrence of volcanic lava flows which pick up numerous impurities on its way down the mountain and is then cooled as it comes in contact with water.  Due to the massive amount of these impurities, they cannot be accurately measured or precisely plotted using the Periodic Table of Elements.  We know it is a type of volcanic silica glass, but all other impurities picked up along the way cannot be as easily identified if they can be identified at all.

3. Minerals must be natural.
All minerals must be natural.  This simply means that to be a true mineral, it must be a naturally occurring phenomenon.  They cannot be enhanced or manipulated in any way.

4. Minerals must be inorganic.
Minerals must, by their very definition, be inorganic.  Inorganic substances are of mineral origin, whereas organic substances are usually of animal or plant origin.  Case in point- Amber. Amber cannot be classified as a mineral due to the fact that it is fossilized plant resin.  Jet also falls into this category.  Both Jet and Amber are organic and amorphous in nature, which exclude them from being classified as a mineral.

A mineral must meet all four requirements. While many may pass one or two criteria, they are still not accurately categorized as a mineral.  A rock for example, occurs naturally (#3) and is inorganic (#4), however, it does not fall within the parameters of #1 and #2 (a crystalline structure, precise formula).  A rock is a consolidated material composed of grains of one or more minerals.

Minerals fall into one of eight classes.  You may see various sites include others, such as mineraloids and organics, but these are basically "extras" to fit pieces like Amber, Obsidian and Jet into since they do not meet all four specific criteria of a mineral.

Let us take a look at the Mineral Classes, one by one.  To keep this simple, the subclasses of each Class (and there are many) are being left out.  And while some of the information may be far too scientific (I know it was for me), it is fun to see where some of these minerals sit in relation to the classes themselves.

Silicate class
The largest group of minerals by far are the silicates (95% of all rocks are silicates), which are composed largely of silicon and oxygen, with the addition of ions such as aluminum, magnesium, iron, and calcium.  Some popular Silicates include ALL Quartz (Clear, Smoky, Amethyst, Citrine), the entire family of Beryl (Aquamarine, Emerald, Goshenite, Heliodor, Morganite, Bixbite), Danburite, Larimar, Peridot and Phenakite, just to name a few.

Carbonate class
The Carbonate minerals consist of those minerals containing the anion (CO3)2- and include calcite and aragonite (both calcium carbonate), dolomite (magnesium/calcium carbonate) and siderite (iron carbonate).  Carbonates are commonly deposited in marine settings when the shells of dead planktonic life settle and accumulate on the sea floor.  Carbonates are also found in evaporitic settings (e.g. the Great Salt Lake, Utah) and also in karst regions, where the dissolution and reprecipitation of carbonates leads to the formation of caves, stalactites and stalagmites.  The carbonate class also includes the nitrate and borate minerals.  Some well known Carbonates include Calcite, Aragonite, Malachite, Azurite, and Rhodochrosite.

Sulfate class
Sulfates all contain the sulfate anion, SO42-.  Sulfates commonly form in evaporitic settings where highly saline waters slowly evaporate, allowing the formation of both sulfates and halides at the water-sediment interface.  Sulfates also occur in hydrothermal vein systems as gangue minerals along with sulfide ore minerals.  Another occurrence is as secondary oxidation products of original sulfide minerals.  The Barite Group (Celesite, Angelsite and Barite), Anhydrite, and Gypsum belong in the Sulfate Class.

Halide class
The Halides are the group of minerals forming the natural salts and include Fluorite (calcium fluoride), Halite (sodium chloride), Sylvite (potassium chloride), and sal ammoniac (ammonium chloride).  Halides, like sulfates, are commonly found in evaporitic settings such as playa lakes and landlocked seas such as the Dead Sea and Great Salt Lake. 

Oxide & Hydroxide classes
Oxides are extremely important in mining as they form many of the ores from which valuable metals can be extracted.  They also carry the best record of changes in the Earth's magnetic field. They commonly occur as precipitates close to the Earth's surface, oxidation products of other minerals in the near surface weathering zone, and as accessory minerals in igneous rocks of the crust and mantle. The oxide class includes both oxide and the hydroxide minerals. The Corundum group (Ruby, Sapphire), as well as Hematite, Magnetite and Spinel are all members of the Oxide and Hydroxide Class.

Sulfide class
Many sulfide minerals are economically important as metal ores.  The Sulfide class also includes the selenides, the tellurides, the arsenides, the antimonides, the bismuthinides, and the sulfosalts (sulfur and a second anion such as arsenic).  Members of this class include Galena, Pyrite and Cinnabar.

Phosphate class
The Phosphate mineral group actually includes any mineral with a tetrahedral unit AO4 where compound A can be phosphorus, antimony, arsenic or vanadium.  By far the most common phosphate is Apatite which is an important biological mineral found in teeth and bones of many animals.  Members of the Apatite Group (Apatite, Mimetite, Pyromorphite, and Vanadinite), Brazilianite and Turquoise are members of the Phosphate class.

Element class
The elemental group includes metals and intermetallic elements (Gold, Silver, Copper), semi-metals and non-metals.  While you may think that a Diamond is a member of the Silicates class, it is actually a member of the Element class, being made up from Carbon.

So let's recap using the KISS (Keep it simple spiritually) method-

• A rock is not a mineral since it only meets two out of four criteria.
• A rock is not a crystal (even though on occasion we call Diamonds, rocks...as in, "Wow! Look at that rock!"
• A crystal is a mineral. It meets all four criteria.
• Amorphous is defined as "not having a repetitive crystalline structure" and there for cannot be minerals. Amber is a good example of this.
• There are 8 accepted Mineral Classes and numerous sub classes which further help to categorize and identify minerals.

The first time I went to a crystal show as a buyer, I was just starting out and admittedly had a lot to learn.   My addiction to crystals started some years before, but this was the first opportunity I had to purchase for my own business.  One thing I had learned early on was what I liked and what I did not like. (It earned me quite the reputation and a humorous nick name to boot).  But there were also other factors I was now looking for, as my purchases were not only for me, but for the others I would be serving.

There were many things I now had to take into consideration,on a much larger scale, when purchasing a crystal.  Size, of course, depending on the how the stone would be used.  Polished flats were requested for healing since they lay on the body much better than a tumble, flatter 3/4" tumbles for my jewelry wrappers, larger polished specimens for healing rooms, etc.  What the stone may hold, in the way of energy and purpose was also key in my decisions.  And I was always on the look out for those odd, unusual and hard to get pieces.

As I wandered, quite overwhelmed, from table to table, I will never forget a seller describing a specific piece I was looking at.  "This", he said, "is a totally polished, opaque piece with a few minor pits and dings".   Um, what?  Polished, I understood, but the rest was a language I was none too familiar with and I am thinking my blank stare probably appeared quite funny to this Brazilian.   And in a matter of moments, this gentle spoken, heavy accented, sweet man began to train me in the art of descriptive terminology.

This is what I share with you today.  I am all about simplicity, so this is a list I created to explain, in simple terms, a crystals "character".  So let's begin!

PITTED OR PITTING

Many stones can be tumbled, like the Nephrite Jade you see in this example.  Most pieces that are identified as "Jade" take a very high polish and tend to be smooth and uniform in appearance.   However, sometimes during the tumbling process, the stones come out with a mostly smooth finish with indented areas called "Pits" or "Pitting".   These can usually be identified by touch or visible to the naked eye.

Does it affect the energy of the stone?  In my opinion, no, it is simply a natural occurrence in the tumbling process.

DENT OR DING

This is very similar to Pits and/or Pitting.  There are some tumbles that are for the most part smooth, but may have a small single dinged or dented area.  This is a relatively common occurrence.   Most tumbled stones, as they go through the process, are handled frequently, from tumbling to bagging to shipping.  A small ding may appear along the way like in this piece of Rose Quartz.

Or, it could simply be that the stone had an indentation in it before the tumbling process began.  In order not to lose a good portion of the stone by tumbling until that one pit is out, they keep the indented area and more of the stone for the customer.

ROUGH TUMBLED

The Chrysoprase you see here is an example of what is identified as "Rough Tumbled".  It has gone through the same tumbling process but due to a variety of factors (location, matrix included, tumbling process, hardness of stone, etc.) it may not be as smooth as other tumbled stones.

Many people like the rough tumbled since they feel it still is close to its natural state with just a few rough edges smoothed out.

SMOOTH TUMBLED

This Carnelian tumble is a very good example of a smooth tumbled stone.  This particular piece has no pitting, no rough areas, no dents or scratches.  It is simply smooth all the way around.

Many stones are identified as "Smooth" due do their hardness and ability to polish well.

NATURAL

When I describe something as "Natural"or "Raw", I mean that it is totally free from processing (tumbling or polishing).  Some Rubies, Sapphires, Apatites and Kunzite pieces, just to name a few, would fall into this category.  Also look for pale Citrine and Smoky Quartz, normally identified in the description as "Natural",  as these are more than likely natural, un-enhanced (see next entry) pieces.

ENHANCED (LAB or HAND-MADE)

"Enhanced" pieces, normally lab enhanced or man made should always be identified as what they are-enhanced.  This means they were either grown in a lab or in some way enhanced, like the bonding of Gold to make Aqua Aura, heat treating to make a more colorful Citrine or the extra irradiation to create dark Smoky Quartz.  Other stones that are enhanced include sparkly Goldstone, metallic Silicon and lab grown Chalcanthite.

TRANSPARENT

When we speak of a piece being "transparent", it describes a piece that is see through.  Some call these water clear pieces.  The definition of Transparent/Transparency is the property of allowing transmission of light through a material.  See the Green Kunzite example below.

Many natural quartz points as well as polished orbs and points may be transparent.

SEMI-TRANSPARENT

The Spessartite Garnet here is an example of a "Semi-transparent" crystal.  Light is able to move through the crystal in some areas which appear more transparent than other areas of denser material in which the light cannot pass though as easily.

Many semi-translucent pieces appear as if a sheer fabric is being held up in front of them.  You can somewhat see through the fabric, but the light allowed through is lessened making the piece appear more clouded and muted.  Here is an absolutely beautiful picture of Lepidolite that shows another perfect example of Semi-Transparency.

OPAQUE

When you are working with material that is impenetrable to visible light, it is called "Opaque".  The Black Obsidian shown here would be described as Opaque, because when it is held up to a light source, no light passes through and it remains unchanged in appearance.

For me, I find that having this information is very helpful.  It is great help to have this knowledge in your crystal and stone vocabulary, especially when you are not present to purchase in person.  You can take advantage of this simple terminology to describe in detail what exactly it is you are looking for.  So go pick up some crystals and get to know them a little better.  Whether there are pits or dings, smooth or rough exteriors, polished or natural -- they are all part of the crystals character and life experiences.

Everything, everywhere carries some type of energy signature.  Whether it be your favorite coffee mug, a pen, or a rock.  Many would label these items as inanimate.  And what is the definition of Inanimate?  1: not animate: a: not endowed with life or spirit <an inanimate object> b: lacking consciousness or power of motion <an inanimate body>  2: not animated or lively: dull

But is that really true?  Is anything truly inanimate?  Sure, a rock may sit there and not dance or sing, but as I have continued to work with crystals,  I find that they are indeed endowed with life and/or spirit.  Do they have a consciousness?  Maybe not in the sense of the word as we know it, but I do feel that they have been infused with energies throughout their life, be it from their development into being (time, minerals, energy, water) or by those who imprinted their consciousness into the crystals themselves.

So let's break this down a bit.

How Crystals are formed-A Brief History

The Geological/Scientific explanation is that crystals are the most stable form of matter in the Universe.  This is due to their formation (birth) within the planet.  The crystal's journey begins deep below the planet's surface where extremely hot fluids circulate (Hydrothermal veins) or where lava (molten rock ejected to the surface) is present.

Crystallization occurs when layers of the planet's mantle, fractures, allowing heated gases and liquids, forced by extreme pressure, to rise towards the surface.

This extremely hot "soup" also contains other elements such as water, oxygen, sodium, aluminum, calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron that have dissolved and merged with the other materials being pushed to the surface.

As this mixture rises and passes through cooler, less active layers of rock, crystals begin to grow in crevices and cavities.  The crystals will form depending on specific environmental conditions and mixture of these elements.

Other conditions include temperature, pressure, time and space.  Exposure to the planetary elements such as wind, water, ice and light, also play their part in dictating formation, growth, shape, color, hardness and size.

The Metaphysical/Spiritual/Energetic explanation is quite a bit simpler - Each action of formation has energy.  Each mineral element has energy.  Each planetary element contains energy.  The location where the crystal is formed also contains energy and contributes an important piece of the puzzle.  Different areas of the planet hold different and unique energies, which will affect the crystal in its growth as well.

From "harvest" to your hands

A crystal has matured in its location and inevitably someone will find it and "harvest" it.  There could be hundreds of crystals located in a mine or found buried in the Earth.  The way it is harvested also imprints the crystal with energy.  It may be blasted out, dug out, handled hundreds of times, washed with acid to clean it, packed and shipped, cut, tumbled or polished…the energies it comes in contact with are many.  To those who feel crystals are inanimate objects, this is the normal procedure for processing rocks.  To one who uses crystals in a more spiritual/energy type capacity, this creates energy that may be jagged and unbalanced.

And this is why we of the living crystal energy mind set tend to cleanse our crystals when they arrive.  To remove and smooth out any energies from before the crystal came to us.

How does Crystal Energy work?

How does crystal energy work?  Very simply, the energy signature held within a crystal carries a vibration.  It may be a low, grounding, Earthy vibration or a higher spiritual one (and everything in between as well).

Color also carries an energy signature, which adds to the crystals vibration.

We choose crystals for their energy based on where OUR energy is at that moment.  If you are feeling blue (sad, depressed, down) almost inevitably, you are drawn to a crystal from the blue color family.  Why?  Because blue crystals are known to be of a higher energy vibration.  When you pick up that blue crystal, your own vibration is immediately raised to match the vibration of the crystal, making you feel better.

The energy vibration of the crystal merges with our own energy vibration.

We use crystals to help with specific issues, be it physical, emotional, spiritual.  We choose these crystals for the energy vibration that they carry.  We, in effect, absorb the energy of the crystal into our own energy field.

Just like we ingest food, which in turn is absorbed into our body. Crystal energy is absorbed into our energy vibration.

Imprinting

Crystals freely give of their energies.  No judgments, no conditions.  The energy is pure, loving, and unconditional.

They will also absorb the energy around them, again with no judgments.

There was a time that I would become irked when someone mentioned that his or her crystal was sad or hurt if it was not utilized for a time.  Or that it was jealous when a new crystal was purchased and brought home.  "A crystal does not have feelings!" I would remark.  "Feelings denote consciousness which denotes ego and a crystal most definitely does not have ego."  I would continue.

While this may be a sound judgment (or not--It was then that I felt the need to go pick up a crystal to help me with my judgment issues), what I came to realize is that the crystal could be exhibiting ego energy that was imprinted into it by the caretaker; therefore it was a mirror to the caretaker's energy.  The crystal is a vessel of energy storage.  So if the caretaker was hurt by someone who was ignoring them in their life, this energy would be infused into the crystal as well and a comparison between the two would be formed.

Through the interaction with the crystal, a caretaker will learn about his or her own energy vibration.  And in the learning will come those amazing ah'ha moments that will inevitably assist in growth and learning.  Vibration to vibration.

In this "human" experience, Crystals can be our teachers.  They are amazing tools that will assist us in learning, healing, and growing within our own energy vibrations.  They are presented to us exactly when we need them and for the purpose we need them for (whether we consciously understand it or not).  Energy to energy, one to the other.

It has been said that Source (the Divine, God, Goddess, higher self, whatever you choose to call higher consciousness) created so that it could know itself.

For me, crystals are a reminder of Source and what we, in this human form, aspire to remember.  It is a way to touch Source, to remember what we truly are.  A way to connect with the Higher Self and commune with loving, divine energy of Source.  And for me, that is how crystal energy works.

You have just purchased a new batch of crystals from your favorite crystal shop.  You have cleansed them using the method you most resonate with.  You have programmed them to assist you in a particular (or general) purpose.  Now, you ask, "Do they need to be stored?"  "How do I store them?"  "Are there any I should not put together when I store them?"  All very good questions!!

For me personally, none of my crystals are stored, as such.  They are all laid on altars or tables or bookcases throughout my home.  Even the ones that I care take, until they are sent to their new homes, are allowed to play with the others.  However, there are cases when you want to keep those special, unique or rare pieces safe and sound.  Or maybe you prefer to keep all of your crystals organized, labeled and away from each other as to not cause any damage.  So let's get started with the basics and tackle physical storage ideas first!

For those of you "Rock Hounds", who go out and collect your own specimens or for anyone who has raw specimens in a collection, The Complete Book of Rocks and Minerals by Chris Pellant suggests the following: "House your rocks and minerals in trays within a drawer. You can easily make the trays at home to fit the drawer and the specimens, or you can buy them from specialist suppliers.  Pack the more delicate items with tissue paper to prevent them from moving or rubbing against each other.  Small, clear plastic boxes are also useful for storage."

At most variety stores, you can purchase a plastic chest with many small drawers in the hardware section for fewer than ten dollars ($10.00).  These are wonderful to use as the drawers are small, to hold one specimen or a few tumbled pieces.  They are also great in that you can label each little drawer with the name of the crystal.  This is particularly helpful if you are just starting out.  You may want to line the drawers with a cotton square or other soft material to keep the raw pieces from sliding around and causing possible damage.

Another idea is to get some of poly "egg crate" material, also easily purchases in any variety store in the bedding section.  They usually come in rolls so you can cut the amount you need to line a box or container quite easily.  This works particularly well for keeping wands, points and larger specimens spaced away from each other so no damage will be caused.

In The Crystal Bible by Judy Hall, she suggests the following for special care of your crystals, "When not in use, wrap your crystals in a silk or velvet scarf.  This prevents scratching and protects the crystal against absorbing foreign emanations."

There are a few specimens that need special attention that you should be aware of.  Any crystal or specimen that should not be cleansed in water should also be kept in a dry, warm space.  For instance, Halite, which is a type of salt crystal, will deteriorate if it is kept in a damp or cold location.  Crystals such as Calcite, Celestite, Angelite, etc. also may soften and disentigrate if kept in damp conditions.  The rule of thumb here is, if you shouldn't cleanse it in water, then don't keep it in damp conditions. 

Other specimens you should be particularly concerned about storing, are those that may contain arsenic or asbestos or other toxic materials and are in their raw form.

Realgar is a beautiful, bright red crystal that is amazing to look at.  However, just be aware that Realgar also contains amounts of Arsenic, which may be absorbed through the skin.  When working with Realgar, or other mineral specimens which may be toxic, just remember to wash your hands after use, do not put your hands to your eyes, face, mouth, etc. before washing them and keep these type of specimens in a small, plastic cabinet specimen type of box or wrapped in tissue paper and stored in a small box.  Other raw minerals to consider packing in this way include: Cinnabar, Crocoite, Malachite and fibrous forms of Tremolite or Ulexite.  For an updated listing of minerals/crystals that you want to be aware of, we have provided an article entitled  "Crystal Cautions" as a reference.

Also, keep in mind, that pieces that are tumbled or have been heat-treated have a much less likelihood of absorbing through the skin and would be safer to use in healing, meditation and the like.

Now a thought on tumbled stones.  Tumbled stones are, of course, prone to scratching and chipping, but they are, by far, much sturdier than their raw counterparts.  Remember, softer pieces like Angelite and Calcite may scratch easier, so just use common sense if you choose to store these type of tumbled pieces.  Many places sell sectional trays that would work just fine in the case of tumbled stones.

There is one thought shared with me quite often, and that is, that some crystals do not like being put with other crystals, or they may be detrimental if placed beside each other.  I personally do not agree with this mode of thought, but as with all things, if it resonates with you, then it is your truth, and it will be honored.

Crystals are energy, just as we are energy.  They each carry a specific vibration or energy signature.  In my simple-minded way, I think of it like this:

Place 50 people in a room.  They all have different and unique personalities, energies and dynamics.  Some may clash, some may feel shy, some may be outgoing and some are so energetic they can lift the entire room.  Crystals are much the same, energetically.  However the difference is that they do not have ego or work at a five sensory level as most of us do.  So when we state that one crystal should not be placed by another for fear of some unseen or unforeseen consequences, then we are truly stating that, from our five sensory perspective, (our experience as a human being) that it must be true.  Mainly because this is all we know.  I truly cannot think of one crystal that I would not place beside another.  And in fact, the hundreds of personal pieces I have and the hundreds of pieces I care take while they await new homes, have free reign of my space.  None has ever been harmed.

So you have purchased some crystals, yes?  Beginners may ask themselves, “Now What?”  The purpose for utilizing crystals can be vast, yet very personal.  Each person resonates at their own unique energy frequency and is naturally drawn to certain stones based on where they are at that particular moment in time.  The stones that you have chosen will follow this rule.

The two most common uses for crystals are to change the energy in an area or to change the energy on your person.  This article will offer suggestions on how to utilize crystals to change/add energy to an area such as a sacred space, home, or healing room.

Crystals are energy.  When placed in an area, they will infuse their energy into that space.  Think of a tarred road sitting under a scorching sun.  You can see the heat rising and filling the air.  Crystals and their energy work in a similar way.  Their energies rise and fill the space around them.  So, let’s use a common example such as negativity in a space.

A neighbor frustrates you.  They come to visit unannounced and invite themselves in for coffee.  While they make themselves comfortable at your table, they begin a conversation about how they dislike this or that.  They gossip and spread false rumors about other neighbors.  They are filling your space with negativity.  Ack! You are uncomfortable and may feel anger at their intrusion.  How can they come into your home and fill it with such stuff?!

The invisible energy in your home swirls and contorts with this infusion.  The energy around your body (your auric field) feels heavy and unsettled.  You may silently judge yourself for even allowing them into your space and remind yourself in the future to set some boundaries.  Once they leave, you breathe a sigh of relief but cannot shake what you perceive as a black cloud in and over your home.  What to do??

Take a moment to step outside.  Breathe the fresh air.  Settle your emotions.  When you walk back inside, light some candles or incense to dissipate any heavy energy that is still remaining.  Play your favorite music. You may want to smudge the area or open some windows to allow fresh energy to waft in.  How about some crystals to assist?

Keep a bowl of crystals on your kitchen table that include those that are helpful for dissipating/removing negative energies.  Snowflake Obsidian, Apache Tears and Amethyst would be a wonderful combination.

You may want to put a couple of chunks of Black Obsidian outside and on either side of your front door.  In the room where you front door (or side door—which ever folks enter through) is located, you could set a piece of Black Tourmaline in each corner.  Black Tourmaline is a wonderful resource to use when you want to diffuse negativity and transmute the energy into loving kindness.

You could carry a piece of Hematite in your pocket to keep your energy field grounded and balanced during this challenging circumstance.  One of my favorite pocket combos is a combination of Black Tourmaline and Rose Quartz.  As the Black Tourmaline surrounds you with an invisible barrier of energy that will not allow these negative energies to penetrate your energy field, the Rose Quartz will fill you and your energy field with love, compassion and understanding.

You may want to wear a pendant or earrings with your favorite crystal.  This surrounds your body and infuses your auric field with positive, loving energies.

Or try an experiment.  Place a tumbled Charoite in a glass pitcher of water for 24 hours.  You may even want to set the pitcher out in the sunshine to further infuse it.  Use some of this water (one part infused water to two parts regular water) to make your neighbor a cup of coffee.  Any of these suggestions would work in an office environment as well.

OK, so we have seen an example of how to diffuse energies we don’t want.  How about energies we DO want? A sacred space or healing room is a prime example.  The intent behind these types of spaces is one of love, higher good, healing, and peace, so the crystals you choose will have these attributes.

Place a group of crystals under a healing table to fill the room, yourself and your guest with higher vibrational energies that will assist in the body accepting the healing energies.  Many healers will actually make a grid with a variety of crystals under their table to assist in this area.  Selenite is a particular favorite. You may also want to sprinkle other crystals around the room or find a larger, single centerpiece.

Placing Clear Quartz in a healing room is an amazing addition, as Quartz will amplify the energy of the other healing crystals you have placed throughout the room and around your healing table.

For a sacred space, pick some crystals that you absolutely adore, that bring you joy and place them around the room or on your altar.  This is a space to fill with your favorite things, which lifts you to a higher vibration/frequency allowing you to connect with the higher self that is you.

You may want to highlight a single piece on your altar or table each week that will assist you in working on a specific issue.  Choose with a specific intent in mind, or allow your intuition to make the choice by looking over your crystals and picking up the one that you are drawn to at that moment.

It is also a good idea to keep a journal.  Write down crystals and/or combinations of crystals that work effectively for you—whether it is for personal issues or for a specific healing session.  Remember, your energy vibration is unique.  Taking notes or writing down these observations will assist you in finding your own crystal path.

Crystals are a tool, not a cure all, but as you continue to understand your energy and how crystals can affect this energy, you will be amazed at what presents itself to you.  Experiment!  Have fun!  And remember, there is no right way and no wrong way—there is only YOUR way, which is perfect and complete just the way it is.

Basic Information to help you choose and create your own Sacred Space
Once you have chosen to create a sacred space, the first question is--How do I begin?  Are there guidelines? Rules?  What do I need to create my altar space?  There are many questions that you may want or need answers to when beginning a new endeavor.   This article will provide information and some answers to general questions as well as give some basic ideas on altars and their purpose.  Altars are not specifically for one culture, religion, or people.  Altars are a universal symbol of what we create in our life, the gifts we find special in our heart and the ideas we hold dear.

Items you may choose to place on your altar

Chalice--Holy Grail, fulfillment
Holy Ash--from a sacred fire or cremation of a Holy person
Medicine Bag--a bundled collection of sacred objects
Prayer Beads/Mala/Rosary--use as a focus for your prayers
Book or Books--to energize your altar or to read a passage out of daily
Prayer Wheel--Tibetans use this hand held "windmill" to focus
Mandala--Sacred geometric design used for focus and aid in meditation
Circle--completion/wholeness Can be made of anything you hold dear
Cross--In Christianity symbolizes the intersection of heaven and earth
Egg--new beginnings, regeneration
Feather--unity with Creator, also used in smudging rituals
Pentagram--five pointed star of harmony and balance
Star--symbolizes the heavens, great attainment
Pyramid--symbolizes revelations, ancient mysteries
Triangle--symbolizes the divine trinity or path toward higher union

Deities
Denise Linn in her best selling book, Altars states, "..Welcoming the energy of the deities of the past can sometimes fill a need not addressed by the religious system of our times.  A figurine or a painting or drawing of the deity can be placed on your altar as a reminder of the qualities that the deity represents.  For example, a figurine of Chinese Kuan Yin usually represents compassion and the nurturing mother..."  Some deities are listed below.  This of course is only a small sampling of the deities that are in existence.

Offering Suggestions
An offering on your altar signifies your gift to the Universe.  Each culture has a variety of offerings which can be utilized.  A few suggestions are shared here. 

Ashes--represent purification and regeneration
Bowl--A container to place your offerings
Corn--in many cultures represents harvest and abundance
Flowers--one of my favorites which represents an emblem of the Divine
Fruit-- symbolizes the feminine spirit and harvest
Grain--symbols of prosperity and renewal
Rice--represents good fortune
Salt--symbols of purification and resurrection
Tobacco--symbolizes a connection to the spirit world
Water-- a representation of cleansing and spiritual attunement
Wine--symbols of the blood of life, eternal life

Colors and their meanings
Whether you burn candles as part of your ritual or lay cloth on your altar, color does play a role in the creation of your sacred space.  Listed here are some basic colors and what they represent.

Black --Introspection
Blue--relaxation, meditation, peace, also represents the 5th Chakra
Green--healing and balance, also represents the 4th Chakra
Orange--happiness, socializing, also represents the 2nd Chakra
Pink--love, softness, also represents the 8th Chakra
Purple--royal, intuition, in most cases, represents the 6th Chakra
Red--stimulating, activating, passion, also represents the root or 1st Chakra
White--purity, in most cases represents the crown or 7th Chakra
Yellow--wisdom, communication and represents the 3rd Chakra

	The Abundance crystal configuration is most accurately identified as one main crystal with many smaller crystals clustered around the base.  Use an Abundance crystal when you want to attract abundance into your life--be it prosperity, happiness or health.  Using Feng Shui energy, you may want to place the crystal in the appropriate corner of your Home or office.
	Activation Crystals, also called Time line orTime Link crystals are identified as being a slightly slanted rectangular shape.  If the rectangular face is to the right of the main face, it is called a Right Time Line or Right Time Link crystal and denotes accessing information from the Future.  If the rectangular face is to the left of the main face it is called a Left Time Line or Left Time Link crystal and will assist in accessing information from the past.
	This is a prime example of a Barnacle Crystal.  This particular crystal can be recognized by a larger quartz crystal that is covered or partially covered with smaller crystals.  These can be randomly attached with no discernible pattern. The larger crystal is the "old soul" which contains the wisdom and trust which attracts the younger crystals.  This type of crystal can promote a stimulation of family or group cooperation.  It is also used to be a companion when having lost a loved one.
	The Bent Crystal  occurs when one or more crystals break at some point during the growth process and then later visibly rejoin or heal at an angle.  The Bent Crystal can show us that while we may face challenges and "feel" broken, we too, can heal.  Bent Crystals signify strength in decision making and confidence in self to face, head on, all that challenges us.  There are also natural Curved Crystals, whose growth forms a curve during growth as opposed to Bent which are clearly bent from a fracture and regrowth.
	A Bridge Crystal is a crystal that connects or bridges two crystals together.  Bridge crystals, as the name implies, bridges gaps.  Its energy will bring to light that missing piece or connection that you have been seeking to solve a misunderstanding, problem or issue.  This crystal forms a bridge to the inner world of higher self and the outer world of the physical/ego.  It can also bridge the gap of communication between self and angels/guides.
	A Burr Crystal  is a three dimensional cluster, with the best specimens having crystal points radiating from the center, with virtually no center matrix.  A true Burr is very Rare!   Burr Crystals would make remarkable healing assistants, as the energy from the crystalline formation would send energy out in all directions, similar to a sphere.  Place a Burr Crystal in the middle of your grid for radiating energy.
	Candle Quartz , also identified as Pineapple Quartz (One prominent point with parallel points stepping up around all sides, similar to candle drippings), is a very calming stone which can be used to eliminate tedium and oppression from one's environment.  It also can assist in the realization of damage done consciously or unconsciously to the physical body, so that a solution can be found and put into action.  Candle Quartz helps to look inward and discover our truth and our path.  A stone of insight sometimes used for scrying, it also dissipates feelings of oppression.  Candle Quartz increases confidence and sensitively while promoting tranquility.
	Cathedral Quartz , also commonly referred to as a Light Library or Cathedral Lightbrary (Lightbrury), is a crystal that holds a record of all that has occurred on Earth.  Cathedral Quartz may look to be composed of several or separate pieces, but they are all part of the main crystal.  The Light Library can be accessed by meditating with one of these beauties.  It aids attunement to the Universal Mind and provides access to the Akashic Records.
	The Channel Face crystal is a point whose main face or facets have seven outside edges.  If this crystal also has a triangular face directly opposite of the main face (on the back side) it is called a Channeling Crystal.  The Channeling crystal allows focus deep within yourself and/or from sources (guides, angels, higher self, etc.) that are outside the "normal" realm.  One source of information states that, "each of the seven sides of the main face represents the seven qualities that the human consciousness must attain in order to access and channel the wisdom of the inner soul."
	This is an example of a Clear Quartz Cluster.  A crystal cluster is defined as three or more crystals with a common base.  The crystals may be small or large, or a combination of sizes.  As well as the amplification properties quartz exhibit, this type of cluster will assist in breaking up negativity within an environment and has purification properties.  It also is a protector and promotes harmony.  The crystal cluster will radiate energy out to the surrounding environment and can also absorb unwanted energy.
	Here is an example of a Diamond Window Quartz Crystal.  It can be a four sided vertical Diamond shaped face as one of the main six faces (Rare) or between and slightly lower than the six main faces, making it the Seventh Face (Uncommon).  This type of crystal allow us to see the spirit realms and leads us within.  It is literally a window to the soul, as it assists us in receiving intuitive answers to questions while bypassing ego and/or intellect.  The Diamond  faced crystal can assist the balance between the Spiritual world and the material world.  It provides a doorway (or window) into other levels of be-ing and a deep connection with Self.
	A "Dolphin" crystal, also known as a "Mother and Child" crystal is identified as a large crystal with a smaller one closely attached to its "back".  This type of crystal configuration promotes nurturing and mothering energies, be it conceiving a child or creating a new project.  It is one of the best crystal configurations to assist in gently healing the inner child from past hurts and harms as it allows one to face these issues while feeling safe and secure, bringing back the joy and playfulness of the true child within.
	The Dogtooth crystal is a nearly diamond shaped, elongated crystal with two opposing faces and sides. They resemble..well...Dog teeth :)  This configuration occurs after Calcite has eroded due to an over abundance of water current.  The rock crystal then forms in its place.  Use Dogtoothed Calcite as a meditation stone and focus tool.  It allows the holder to go into the piece and marvel at its landscape.  Very earthy, very grounding.  Dogtoothed Calcite can assist one in facing their fears, acknowledging them and letting them go.
	Doubly (Double) Terminated crystals are very easy to recognize, as they have points at each end of the naturally formed quartz crystal.  Energy may move outward in either direction or in both directions concurrently, which is one reason why it is sought after by healers and light workers.  Doubly (Double) terminated crystals can be used for a variety of things including, increasing and intensifying the dream state.  Astral Travel and meditation also are assisted by this crystal.
	The Elestial crystal has a surface that may show flat to nearly flat point tips, with triangular cut like spaces.  This is a powerful crystal, with the belief being that it can repair damaged cells in the brain and rewire damaged areas.  The Elestial can be used to assist in the mass cleansing, healing and reawakening that is currently facing us.  Elestials are also known to bring great comfort to those in a dying process, assisting in the release of fears.  Elestiallated means that portions of the crystal appear to be wrinkled both visually and to the touch.
	This is what is known as an Enhydro, meaning there is fluid, carbon or gas pocket within the crystal.  The fluid can be very old and more than likely very pure.  An Enhydro will assist one in recognizing and/or understanding the true feelings of another, supporting the empathetic nature.  It contains a life sustaining energy, assisting in healing in many ways.
	The ET Crystal  is identified as a crystal that has a single termination (point) at one end and multiple terminations growing downward at the other, which may appear to look like the tail on a rocket or comet.  ET Crystals can be used to enhance the vibrations of energy so that communication with celestial beings, Guardian Angels and Extraterrestrial beings.
	Faden Crystals (aka Faden Growth or Faden Veil)  are identified by the veiled milky feather like line within the structure which usually runs through the crystal.  This linear veil is found almost exclusively in Tabular Crystals.  The line represents the seed point of growth and these particular crystals have the ability to activate new growth within oneself or within someone you may be working with, utilizing healing energy.  This is also a wonderful example of Tabular or "Tabby" crystal.
	A Generator Crystal (also known by the name Merlin Crystal)  is a crystal with six evenly spaced sides and six approximately equal faces that center at the tip.  This is called a Generator Point.  This configuration amplifies, stores, transmits and/or generates energy.  Generators are a great tool to use in any healing modality.  They also work very well in a group setting.  Generators will energetically help to create a connection between the members of the group, uniting the intention and focus.  A crystal generator would make an excellent centerpiece to any grid as well.  It will function as an antennae of sorts, amplifying the energy of the crystal grid and transmitting it out into a sacred space, altar area or healing room.
	A Golden Healer is a crystal or crystal cluster with an iron coating on, or under, the skin.  Colors vary from pale, clear yellow to dark mustards and light reds.   It has an almost greasy type, transparent coating.  The color will not be affected by an acid bath.  Golden Healers can facilitate spiritual communications over a long distance, including between worlds and dimensions.  It is a powerful healing crystal, assisting at all levels.
	A Growth Crater is a four to six sided impression left on the host crystal by the base of another crystal which has since been separated.  Growth Crater crystals signify a point of origin, of beginning, a place of safety and security.  As we grow and become stronger in self empowerment and self realization, we expand our consciousness and no longer need the safety of the "nest".  We then separate ourselves from Home base and fly freely.  Work with a Growth Crater crystal when you want to access past life information/beginnings.  Also very helpful for understanding when or where in your life a particular habit or emotional state may have begun.
	Inner Child or Penetrator Crystals  are those smaller, fully formed crystals that are half in and half out of the main crystal.  This type of crystal will assist in communications, teaching, and a clear understanding between self and another.  These crystals allow the holder to balance between the inner world and outer, receiving information from one (inner) and sharing it with the other (outer).  It also reminds me of our sweet, innocent, Inner child, wrapped closely within the arms of the mother (main crystal) while peeking its head out to face a particular issue and being able to heal that issue in a safe emotional environment.
	Many crystals have Internal Fractures  which are caused by pressure and other elements while the crystal is in various stages of growth.  While at first one may perceive this type of crystal to be "imperfect", these beauties remind us that in the physical state of being, we too, may be perceived in the same way.  But when working with a crystal which contains internal fractures, the realization that we are perfect and complete just the way we are, embraces us.  Our nature is Divine.  Many times you will see rainbows appear where an internal fracture is present.  What better way to validate our Divine nature than the rainbow?
	This is an excellent example of an Interrupted or Growth Interference crystal.  As shown, this type of crystal has various "cuts" on the body, similar to cuts done with a trim saw.  Thin, minute, flat calcite crystals have interfered with the growth pattern of the quartz crystal.  This type of crystal formation is believed to help remove self limitations and energy blockages.
	A crystal with a five sided face (normally as the front or main face) is identified as an Isis Crystal.  This crystal holds feminine/Goddess energies and can be used by both men and women when wanting to access the more feminine side of self.  Isis crystals are a wonderful tool to utilize when you are in the process of taking your power back from someone or something that has in the past taken your power from you.  The Isis crystal will assist you in becoming more aware of and understanding of the role the feminine plays for each of us.
	The Laser Wand may appear to be three sided at first glance.  It will gradually decrease in size from the base to the tip.  Laser Wands "can be used to help heal relationships by cutting the emotional cords of jealousy, insecurity, anger, sorrow or guilt.  They can also be used to assist in breaking attachments towards people or things.  When these cords are cut, one must rebuild the identity based in self love and security."
	A Manifestor is characterized by a crystal growing totally inside another crystal.  Manifestation crystals help those who have had traumatic, physical or emotional, childhood.  Manifestation Crystals are helpful for those who block painful memories.  They help bring the cause of the pain to the surface allowing one to successfully deal with it, while shielding from the pain those memories can cause.  Manifestors can also assist those who are working through current family problems or issues.  Very helpful in assisting with manifestations of any kind.  If there is something wished for by using manifestation techniques, some questions may be, "Do I really want this?" or "Are there reasons I may not want this?"  Be very clear!!  If the crystal perceives mixed messages it may not facilitate the manifestation.
	The Occluded crystal is a type of formation which proceeded in spite of an overabundance of other materials, resulting in a crystal which may appear to be made entirely of something else.  This can happen particularly with chlorite and /or sand.  The crystal at left appears to be made up of sandstone and other silicas, but look closely and you can see a crystal growth formation hidden away.  This crystal reminds us that everything is not always as it appears to be at first glance.  Use this crystal when you are working on being less judgmental of yourself and others.  This is definitely a piece to use when working on issues of self esteem and self empowerment.
	A Phantom crystal is recognizable by a "phantom" or "ghost" crystal within the main crystal, usually comprised of a white or colored mineral being partial or complete.  The Phantom can appear as an outline (ghost) or solid body within the host crystal. The Phantom crystal symbolizes universal awareness.  The energy of the Phantom works to bring together the participants of humanity to save the planet.  It is also an excellent tool for meditation and for assisting in the connection with the higher realms, ESP those of knowledge.  Phantom Crystals may also aid one in meeting a personal guide.  Phantoms promote inner growth and transcendence.  A great crystal for "gazing" as well.
	One of my favorite things to look for in any crystal is the presence of "rainbows".  Rainbows  occur when there is a break or fracture within the crystal, causing certain prismatic effects.  The presence of a rainbow gives additional energies which otherwise may be lacking in a clearer specimen. Rainbows stimulate the awareness of Universal Love. They can assist in drawing off unwanted energies and dispersing healing to the body and/or the environment. Many feel that the Rainbow assists in connection with the Higher Self, Guides, Angels, and a host of teachers/information.
	A Record Keeper has triangular shaped symbol(s) which can be raised or engraved on one or more of the crystal's faces.  These are not easy symbols to see with a one time glance-- they must be held to the light and looked at closely.  Record Keepers are one of the most sacred of all crystals because they hold the knowledge of the Universe.  The ancient Atlantians programmed the Record Keepers before the fall of that great civilization in order to record and safeguard their knowledge.  When one is properly attuned to this crystal, this ancient knowledge may reveal itself.  One must be of pure heart and open mind to access the secrets of the Record Keeper.
	Rutile in Quartz or Rutilated Quartz is easily recognized by the "needles"(usually formed from Titanium Dioxide) encased in the crystal.  The Rutilated crystal draws universal life force energies into the body, is a regenerator and enhances energy in other stones.  Rutilated Quartz also promotes self-determination,self-control, strength of will, resolve, self-reliance, volition, steadfastness.  Good for people who have trouble making decisions.  Also associated with happiness, communication with spirit guardians and general healing.  Rutilated Quartz gets to the root of problems--and fast!  Aids astral travel and absorbs mercury poisoning.
	This natural formation of a quartz crystal is called a Scepter Crystal.  This formation is recognized by the natural crystal forming itself around a crystal "rod" hence, the appearance of the Scepter. The top part of the Scepter should have six edges visible where the rod and crystal meet.  This is known to be a symbol of power and focuses energy within the heart.  These crystals were used in Atlantis and Lemuria in healing ceremonies.
	Self Healed  crystals are identified as a partial or whole crystal that has been severed from its original matrix or cluster.  Some time later, conditions once again become perfect for growth and a new crystal structure begins to grow over the area that was severed.  In effect, the crystal heals its own wounds.  As its name suggests, the Self Healed crystal is here to assist and aid in self healing-- be it physical, emotional, mental or spiritual.  It is able to send supportive energies to those who have had severe emotional, physical or mental traumas.  A wonderful piece to use when facing addictions.
	Tabular or"Tabby" crystals are recognized from the flattened or tabbed shape with "notches" on one or both sides.  The two opposite sides are twice as wide as the others.  Rubbing one's fingernail downward, across the notches, will "open" the crystal and its information.  Tabular Crystals enhance communication and smooth energy flow and balance.  Tabular Crystals (Tabbies) can also assist in communications with nature and spirit beings.
	The Twin Quartz Crystal, also known as the Soul Mate Crystal or Tantric Twin can be recognized by two points that share a single base or two points sharing a common side.  The Twin does not need to mirror in height or faces.  These crystals promote loving contact, tender communication and togetherness.  Twins teach us to blend with all life and realize that our soul is wed to all beings.  This particular crystal is doubly fascinating as it has two smaller crystals protruding from the twins.  These protrusions are called Inner Child crystals or Penetrators.  There is one in each of the twins.
